I worked at Shoprite Supermarkets part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good team. Big company. Great benefits. Flexible hours. Tuition reimbursement. Pleasant place to work, customers are nice and the supermarket is a very important part of the economy so there is pride to be found in working. Oh yeah, it's also Fun!!!

    Cons

Fast fast fast paced environment, lots of customer interaction. Might not be for everyone. If you don't like people and don't want to deal with hordes of them then you need not apply.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing! Management has always gone above and beyond to make the work bearable and engage themselves in each department. Management is very helpful and understanding.

    Cons

Demanding, poor insurance, human resources in store and corporate are terrible. Money hungry Owners of the company. Get written up for stupid stuff, doctors notes are not an excusable absent. Underpaid n overworked, union is worthless no help at all. Don't even expect to get promotion they hirer from outside.

    Advice to Management

Need to get yourselves in check

I have been working at Shoprite Supermarkets part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1) Decent-ish wage
    2) Benefits
    3) Weekly pay

    Cons

I can only speak for Shoprite of Flanders, but I hear most of them are the same.

    1) Calling out sick is akin to murder here. I get sick easily and I also have anxiety so calling out is brutal, and when I go in the management is very snippy to me. Seeing as I work with food, you would think they wouldn't want me to come in anyway, but apparently that doesn't work for them.

    2) They are severely understaffed so even though I was hired and asked to work 10-20 hours a week, I am working a MINIMUM of 25, sometimes up to 35.

    3) You get no benefits until you are there for A YEAR.

    4) They have an employee recognition systems with yellow cards outlining that you have done an exceptional job, and even though a lot of people deserve them, management NEVER gives them out. It's ridiculous.

    5) They promise you there is opportunity to move up but there never is,

    Advice to Management

Make your employees feel wanted, listen to dates when employees can't work, give them recognition for the things they have done.

I worked at Shoprite Supermarkets part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Shop Rite, at least the store I worked at, was and is an excellent employer. The managers were friendly, caring, and the whole situation was egalitarian compared to other big supermarkets. Coworkers were good as well. Compensation is what one would expect from a retail job of that nature. It's still a supermarket job, but it's a good supermarket job.

    Cons

My particular store was somewhat 'tight', in both physical size and staffing. I found myself having to work extremely long hours due to the lack of staff in my department, and the store itself was cramped and lacked many physical amenities.

    Advice to Management

If at all possible, "smooth out" the schedules so that a few people don't have such a lopsided burden, the hardest part of an otherwise excellent experience for me working at the store.

I worked at Shoprite Supermarkets part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Union store is about the only positive thing i can say about working here.

    Cons

They will overwork you and make sure that you will never get full time. Quick to write you up in order to get around the union. Make promises but never come through would rather transfer full time employees and promote them into managerial positions.

    Advice to Management

Dont lie to employees about promotions. Stop being cheap and give hard workers full time.

    Easy to get extra hours.
    Quickly advance.

    Cons

Hair color. Why can't we have whatever color we want?

    Advice to Management

Let associates be themselves. We wear your uniforms, at least let us control our hair.

I worked at Shoprite Supermarkets part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible hours
Short shifts for full time students
Can call out anytime, always someone available to pick up a shift

    Cons

    Management always took customer's side
They can write you up at any time without your knowledge
Too many teenagers that know each other work there and it turns into a hangout environment
Had request off for nationally recognized holidays and more than likely you wouldn't receive off-time
Customers in my area were SEVERELY prejudice and outwardly racist towards staff and management made no effort to resolve issue
