I have been working at Shortridge Academy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Supportive staff, with lots of fun "characters." Smart, good-hearted kids. Committed and active management. Management is always looking for ways to improve what we do, and have done so consistently.

    Cons

Don't underestimate the challenge of working day-in, day-out, year-round helping struggling teens. It is worth it to me, but it requires a strong commitment.

    Advice to Management

I have always told management what I think, and they have listened, so nothing new.

I have been working at Shortridge Academy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A challenging and supportive environment. The best group of people I've ever worked with. Very committed staff, and great students.

I think Shortridge found its stride when they committed to Positive Youth Development. Once they trained all staff to approach students, and the community (approach to policy, etc.) from that perspective, everything really came together. Staff members are happier, and I think they feel appreciated.

    Cons

It's challenging work, and the year-round nature of the school can make it tiring.

    Advice to Management

Keep supporting department heads, they're a huge asset!

    Pros

The kids and floor staff. Wonderful group to work with and most of the kids were appreciative as well as their families.

    Cons

Management - poor execution of policy, constantly changing strategy. No coherent plan. Pay was not fair based on education and experience.

    Advice to Management

None- they lost too many good people that were unappreciated and the core of the school's success.

I worked at Shortridge Academy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some incredible teachers and therapists here

    Cons

A very high turnover, no job security; administration often provides only poor leadership and fear-mongering

    Advice to Management

Listen to you teachers and therapists, and make it your #1 priority to retain your staff. Constant turnover disrupts the learning and therapy that the students need.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Shortridge Academy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I don't think I've ever been challenged as I had been working at Shortridge but my wonderful colleagues made the difference especially our residential managers.

    Cons

Management changing the nature of the program made it astronomically more difficult to work at, often little to no thought about implementation of potentially wide ranging programmatic changes. Haphazard application of rules and little follow through on staff and counselors who don't follow them.

    Advice to Management

Stick with what has worked in the past, I believe Shortridge is at its best when it stuck to its traditions and history, and at its worst when knuckling under to the wants of parents and educational consultants.
