I worked at Shurgard Self Storage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good environment, not a lot of over time expected but available when you want it. Pay is reliable & commissions are good.

    Cons

Not easy to move up, they rarely hire Management from within the company & that is bad for moral.

I worked at Shurgard Self Storage full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good progression to a managerial position from the entry level. Meaning that you can be a store manager within 1-2 years. Area Management at district level is very good and they're very experienced and knowledgable for the area I worked in. Annual events outside of work. Also socials outside of work. Sales training is very good and I did learn a lot from being employed by Shurgard. Diverse role which offers...

    Cons

Single manned means that you spend the majority time of working in store on your own after you have passed your probation. After you are promoted to Store Manager you cannot go any higher. All management positions are employed from outside the company. Other stores within the company steal contracts (which is what your comission is based on). When raised the company doesn't do anything about it. Cleaning prioritised...

    Advice to Management

In order for the staff to focus on sales figures, the wage structure should be more focused on the amount you'd get back in comission. If you do not have an incentive to make a sale, you will not prioritise it. To make more sales and earn money, the salary must be more comission based. Rota should be more structured. Have allocated days to work at Shurgard, whether that is one day in the week and one in the weekend....

I worked at Shurgard Self Storage full-time for more than a year

      Pros

You are always busy so the time goes quickly

      Cons

They do not pay you what they say or put you in the location you apply for. You do not get your contract until 2 weeks after you start with all the clauses by then its too late. The cleaning was a major part of the day: toilets, mousse dropping and urine, scrubbing floors and mopping floors, clean shutter doors, windows, gate and lift rails. I was the cleaner, maintenance person, security, debt collector, locksmith,...

      Advice to Management

Be honest with candidates when you advertise the job and interview. Its not pleasant when 1 months in you realise that you have been lied to from the beginning. Treat your staff like human beings and listen to them. When clients complain to Head Office because we cannot help them in store deal with it instead of emailing it right back to us to deal with because as you know we have no authority to do anything for them.

I have been working at Shurgard Self Storage

      Pros

The weekend hours are decent, HR team is efficient.

      Cons

You will clean more then sell, you will deal with mice, you are treated like janitors. It's the higher managers way or NO way. You cannot choose which store you work in, they will relocate you at any time to suit them. Progression is done only if you jump through hoops to get it. Salary is RUBBISH!

      Advice to Management

Treat your staff like adults, show them that you value them and stop moving people around constantly, maybe the turnover won't be extremely high.

        Positive Outlook

I have been working at Shurgard Self Storage

        Pros

Shurgard has a good bonus scheme that typically rewards the effort put in to deliver the results required.

        Cons

Poor management with bad communication. They have a tendency to entice new staff with a specific work location and then change it. Forced location changes happen every couple of years. Current owners put profit margins first. Sites are poorly maintained. Excessive price increases without any negotiation. The customer pay the increase or leaves.

        Advice to Management

Put people first. Without people (customers and staff) you do not have a business.
