I worked at Shutterfly full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very smart and talented engineering group.

    Cons

Too many people involved in the planning process around projects. It's a great place to work but groups are locked into a silo and there's not much cross team collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Let the engineering team run the projects and have the PM's get out of the way. You have way too many people having a say into the road map and this slows the team down.

I have been working at Shutterfly full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Discounts on their poorly made products if you're into that sort of thing.

    Cons

Insanely poor working conditions, management team lacks focus and panics constantly, CEO can't seem to get anything done, lack of product vision, limited career opportunities, constant political fights and back-stabbing attacks, spiteful imbeciles at the VP level who are too busy gazing at their own navels to think about helping the company succeed, zero engineering leadership.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting fundamentally bad people. Also, stop wasting all that money on a crappy redesign. If shareholders knew you were doing this, they'd be furious.

I have been working at Shutterfly full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay and atmosphere are good not great. Outside of peak season the hours are very good allowing time to have a life outside of work

    Cons

The biggest con is there is no 401k match which is one of the biggest complaints. Certain people in management are simply where they are at because they are part of the good ol boys club

    Advice to Management

Stop with the free product and match the 401k. Don't take away the bonuses from your core employees and then give the E staff thousands of RSU's which equate to half a million dollars

    Cons

    Unexpected business moves
Managers don't listen to employees enough

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent, don't say one thing and do the opposite

    Pros

    Great work life Balance
    Great people
    Good free food

    Cons

Most of the managers have no creativity and are so worried about "Playing Politics" and not focusing on work. Too much focus on making pretty power points when the website has tonnes of bugs.

    Advice to Management

Recognize amazing talent you hire and don't let them leave. Attract fresh talent from outside.

I worked at Shutterfly full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some great individuals working here, which go a long way to make the day tolerable. Benefits are decent.

    Cons

As many have stated before me, gridlock abounds.
Anyone in a position to push something forward seems to have an existential fear of doing so, but they won't say No, they'll just move the meeting, or leave the initiative undecided or otherwise in limbo. put enough roadblocks in front of someone and they soon realize that it's far easier to simply strive towards nothing.
Innovation isn't in their lexicon. Status quo is king, bottom line is queen.
Many decision makers have no business being in the positions they are in, the few that do spend all their energy maneuvering around the others. Many of them left in the 4-6 months following Housenbold's exit.
Those that you can learn a thing or two from are so overworked they are temporally incapable of teaching you.
Pay is stagnant. So if you do decide to take a position there, negotiate hard. 'Raises' in my experience were half the Inflation rate... not kidding.
No interest in fostering or retaining talent. No upward mobility.
    POLITICS. So much politics.

    Advice to Management

You're never going to acquire yourself out of the 1 quarter fiscal year. The younger generation don't print photos like previous generations. No amount of social media exposure is going to change that. To remain viable you need to take risks and innovate. Encourage new ideas and provide the resources necessary to explore them. Actively discourage the petty infighting that's become a staple.

I have been working at Shutterfly full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Company going through culture change of being a technology company which happens to be in eCommerce (vs. an eCommerce company which happens to use technology)
    - Increased communication in all levels of management up to the CEO on a timely basis, with brown bags, fireside chats and online chat forums
    - People are understanding and respects one another
    - Management allows for work-life balance to equally performing staff members
    - Upper management going through positive changes focusing on results and retention

    Cons

    - There are certain groups adjusting to the positive changes, find ways to train a new set of mentality to enable fresh ways of pushing the Shutterfly 3.0 vision
    - Staffing churn suffered from prior management styles, good to see we are actively reviewing ways to retain talented staff with leadership training
    - Exciting technology is sometimes buried in the works, find ways to communicate these out to employees and the public

    Advice to Management

    - Continue the increase of the communication at all levels. The chat forums with the CEO on Slack are really an eye-opener
    - Actively work on engaging and training managers to help contributors with their career path.
    - Find more ways to excite engineers other than introducing new printed media, which are profitable, but we need to invest in exploring new revenue models around digital media

I worked at Shutterfly full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Many NEW engineers were very nice, friendly, and easy to work with.

    Cons

Company Politics was all around. When something goes wrong, everybody starts pointing fingers. The word "Accountability" was used frequently which made people feel threaten. Company culture was awful.

    Advice to Management

Company culture comes from the top! Select people managers not a cookie cut person.

    Pros

The people there are really friendly and the product itself (personalizable photo gifts) truly does bring joy to a lot of people.

    Cons

Bureaucracy can get in the way of good ideas.

    Advice to Management

Keep rewarding your most talented and loyal employees!
