I worked at Shutterfly as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Shutterfly Employees were so welcoming and creative. I believe it is a great space in tech for women. More than half their employees are women!

    Cons

The work gets repetitive at times and there are a lot of slow days. If you're trying to grow and learn a lot in a quick amount of time, Shutterfly may not be the best choice for you.

    Advice to Management

Team bonding is always important so try to emphasize that more and fight for your employees more.

I have been working at Shutterfly full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Company fosters environment where you have great work life balance. Many employees are just starting families, like myself. I was allowed great flexibility in work schedule and workload when we had our child.

    Cons

I felt the stock options and bonuses were below market average, and there is no 401K matching.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the pulse surveys which state dissatisfaction with bonuses and career paths. Whenever this is reviewed, the bad results are always described as not "statistically significant".

    Pros

People - especially individual contributors believe in doing the right thing and encourage one another and want to perform as a team

    Cons

Politics starting from the lowest managerial level . Individuals being asked to work on stuff that has no value but to grab the limelight from your "competitative" team. A lot of managers blatantly violating HR policies . Some managers don't allow work life balance .

    Advice to Management

Top management should try to have talks with individual contributors to understand pain points at ground zero. Managers should manage downwards instead of trying to manage only up . Work hard at retaining your bright talent.

I have been working at Shutterfly full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Still looking for pros. I can't seem to find any.

    Cons

No strategy from the CEO on down. The good employees and leaders are running for the door. Everybody I know is interviewing. Everybody wants out. Forced to execute on a terrible plan in Q4, didn't make any money, and now nobody gets bonuses for the first time in company history. It's like prison, only with personalized cards. Pay is well below market, no matching 401k, no opportunities for career growth, politics everywhere. It just sucks.

    Advice to Management

Do the honorable thing and resign. You don't know what you're doing, and it shows.

I worked at Shutterfly full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Discounts on products and bonuses are pretty nice

    Cons

Things went downhill when our VP of design left and they did not replace him. There was a vacuum and the wrong people stepped in to lead the design team. There were many middle manager changes. No real design leadership. There was a lot of competition over projects.... because it was essentially a free-for-all without a VP to align resources. There was also too much churn and terrible resourcing decisions spawned by new leadership.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to hire designers, get the proper management to help guide them. Design needs to be led by a strong design executive with experience in design and leading a large team. Resource decisions should be handled by a design leader who knows what it takes to launch great experiences.

I worked at Shutterfly full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are wonderful to work with, some solid products, and who doesn't love photos? Work / life balance is what you make it.

    Cons

Sometimes mediocre product launches, quite a bit of technical debt from a spaghetti mess of old code, old systems never die, lack of connectivity from executive leadership to the rank and file. No clear paths for career growth outside the regular tracks, no 401k matching. Difficult to recruit tech new hires when competing with pure tech companies.

    Advice to Management

Encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and participation in the open source community. Better communication across marketing, forecasting, product, and technology organizations. Build products that solve problems.
