    Opens Doors Elsewhere

    Pros

Normal base pay and bonuses, environment in most groups better than at some peer firms (e.g. Latham). Best thing is exit opportunities - I've been here just under a couple of years and have five offers from peer firms after a month of interviews. All with better work/life balance than Sidley.

    Cons

Benefits are sub-par for peer firms, old-school culture compared to a lot of competitors (not okay with WFH), arbitrary and unreasonable deadlines, weekend work expected as a matter of course in some groups. Some groups massively understaffed. Hit or miss in terms of groups. Corporate generally the best unless you work in LA (known to be really tough) and some offices (Dallas especially) apparently have a very old school mentality and a resulting high turnover across all groups. If you get in, stick it out for a year and then go to one of the ten better firms you will have offers from.

    Good introduction to legal life

    Pros

Interesting cases and incredibly hardworking people make Sidley a tough but rewarding place to work. I enjoyed my time there.

    Cons

There are significant differences in how each group is treated but this is understandable given that the attorneys are the ones that run everything.

    Pros

Out of all the companies I've interviewed for, I felt Sidley was the most sincere when it came to caring for its employees. Very glad I chose to join this team.

    Cons

I have no complaints so far.

Don't be fooled by the Cover of Sidley's book

    Pros

You learn a lot about who you are and who you really want to be.

    Cons

You are not respected at this level unless you are willing to work unbearable hours and say yes to every need of the associates. The associates believe you are their personal assistants and they do not like to be reminded. The quality of work does not matter when it comes to your standing at the firm. Instead, your "billable" hours are the most important aspect of your time at Sidley. Because of this it makes staying at Sidley hard. Associates expect your best work product but there are no incentives for good work and frankly no real consequences for "bad" work. There is also little growth to be made. Kissing up to associates works here.
