Above and beyond other law firms
Aug 24, 2022 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I've worked at two other top tier law firms and Sidley is the first that has valued work/life balance. My entire team logs off at 5pm and no one bats an eye.
Cons
Still a very traditional law firm.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
- Great time off benefits - Good work/life balance - Cafeteria - Location
Cons
- Stressful work environment - No career advancement - Relatively low pay for staff employees

Pros
Great colleagues. Smart and hard-working but all seeking their own work life balance
Cons
Nothing atypical for a large firm — Pressure from clients to deliver quality advice under challenging time/budget constraints.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
As Biglaw goes, Sidley is a somewhat more humane place to work than other firms, which admittedly isn't saying much. The people tend to all be polite -- no one who is outright aggressive, but the flipside is a lot of passive aggression. Sidley is generally respectful of taking vacation time and weekends, although this varies by practice group.
Cons
It's Biglaw -- the hours suck and you have little control over your work schedule and work/life balance is difficult to achieve. This is true for any big law firm though.

- Meaningful work with substance. Your work has a direct impact on the firm. - I.T. teams and Development team work well together. - The firm does a great job of keeping technology current. - There is a lot of opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge within the firm. - Company pension - Vacation Time - On-Site Gym - On-Site cafe is awesome - Very competitive pay / bonus structure - Good work/life balance
Cons
- No 401k matching. Sidley makes up for this with a great pension plan. This is the only con I could think of. I enjoyed my time at Sidley. The team functions like a well oiled machine and above all else management has a genuine interest in your morality at the firm. If you are afforded the opportunity to join the firm, I highly recommend it.

Great Place to Get Exposure to Law
May 4, 2018 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
A good amount of mentoring and attorneys are wonderful to work with. They give you lots of good work and are happy to explain things.
Cons
A lot of hours; Not the best work/life balance
