I worked at Sidwell Friends School full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Incredibly talented students, dedicated faculty, intellectual autonomy for teachers, tons of support for professional development.

    Cons

Teachers are under a fair amount of pressure - from parents, students, and (probably most importantly) themselves.

I have been working at Sidwell Friends School full-time

    Pros

So many! Just a few include a lovely campus environment; fantastic benefits; a caring community; inspiring faculty and students; a terrific head of school; stimulating programs; and support for professional growth.

    Cons

The Quaker values infuse everything except the managers.

    Advice to Management

Sidwell would really benefit from requiring managers to take at least one course a year aimed at making them better supervisors/leaders.

    Pros

The majority of faculty and staff are truly professionals in their field. The Quaker values give the institution a wonderful framework to build a strong and united team of educators. Beautiful campus, motivated, friendly, and talented student body. Faculty and staff truly care about the students.

    Cons

Being a professional in one's field does necessarily prepare someone to take on leadership positions so Administrators are constantly reinventing the wheel. Without any real management training or experience prior to being promoted into leadership positions (and with no mentors), Administrators lack knowledge in delegating authority, building teams, division of labor, managing subordinates, holding productive and concise meetings, etc. Highly unequal application and enforcement of existing policy/procedures by Administrators which causes unnecessary friction and lowers moral.

    Advice to Management

Provide continuing management training for Administrators and provide proper oversite. Provide quality management and leadership training for new faculty and staff with support and incentives to refine their skills. Encourage and support faculty and staff when they extend themselves beyond their job description.

I worked at Sidwell Friends School full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A warm professional environment: there's a real sense of community
Free lunch cooked by an incredible chef
Summer's off (although you can work through the summer in a different position for additional pay)

    Cons

Parents can be awful sometimes but there's not really much they can do about that
    Very bureaucratic and slow-changing
Pay is not great, especially for what they charge for tuition

    Advice to Management

Overall, it was a great experience and there's not much I would criticize. Although the rigidness of Sidwell is a con in my eyes, they're a very well-known and respected school and this bureaucracy is a necessity. I do believe they need to consider paying staff better.

I have been working at Sidwell Friends School full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, free lunches, professional development funds available, two beautiful campuses that are near the Metro, free parking.

    Cons

Work load can be heavy at times, poor, unqualified leadership in some divisions, obvious favoritism, wasted funds with no accountability in some divisions. Management wants friends instead of good workers. Slow to embrace change.

    Advice to Management

Implement standard operating procedures at all levels and stick to them. Do something about unnecessary spending.

    Pros

It was a educational and work friendly experience. the campus has a diverse population and everyone is treated the same. The employees all work together and the campus is really an exciting place to work.

    Cons

The challenges are learning the staff and campus life but there are not worries because there is always training available for areas that you may need to grow, computer, job wise or exchanging departments all together it an option to look forward to.

    Advice to Management

The upper management always provide incentives for their employees to gain training.

I worked at Sidwell Friends School full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

During the time I worked here, most members if the administration worked hard to remain committed to the school's Quaker values. The majority of my colleagues were great people to work with--hard-working, honest, caring, passionate--years after leaving, I have maintained meaningful professional and personal relationships with many of them. Sidwell was truly a special place to work. I looked forward to going to work even during the most challenging periods.

    Cons

Vacation leave and other benefits were great, but salary scale was a bit on the low side at least for some of the administrative positions. Also, the school did not offer much opportunity for advancement if you worked in the admin offices.

Like any workplace, there are in-house politics.
