    Pros

    Nice people to work with.

    Cons

The pay is well below the standard, Management does not listen to employees, one of the building does not have A/C through out so if your in production it is hot.
Almost no training to improve your career.

    Advice to Management

Open up the pocket books and invest in the companies facilities. Also pay the people!!!

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities to hone your troubleshooting skills.

    Cons

Nonexistent work/life balance, unpaid overtime is regularly expected of salaried employees, opportunities for advancement are awarded to people outside the company or internal candidates who are poorly qualified based solely on their social circles. Going above and beyond only serves to place a target on your back to those who don't want to put forth the same level of effort. Expect zero recognition or appreciation.

    Advice to Management

You are rewarding the wrong people with promotions and new positions for the wrong reasons and it is damaging to morale and the company's longevity.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich (More than 3 years)

    Pros

the people are great, and the benefits are decent

    Cons

the management, the pay, the short-sighted goals

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more and recognize the value they bring - otherwise eventually all you'll have is the people who don't really care

    I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time

    Pros

The people are dedicated, tenacious and amazingly productive considering the age of or lack of tools, training, mentoring, resources. Some supervisors and managers are great too - visionary, supportive, have your back. Always tons of work to be done as they are so lean. There IS potential flexibility to have a life - but only if you get the right supervisor or manager.

    Cons

Major offshoring continues. 2 sets of wildly divergent values and benefits: those for employees, those for management. Very little trust of employees, little advancement. Good mgrs. with vision beyond just the bottom line many times are ostricized or driven away. Mgmt. seem to feel all are more than capable of working 12 hr days, but only a very select few are able to handle more money or a new title for it. "Experienced" employees are encouraged to retire.

    Advice to Management

To increase profit, success, engagement, reduce churn, practice fairness. Embrace experienced employees vs driving them out. If employees would see less cronyism (who you know), favoritism in promotions and abusive mgrs. tolerated/ rewarded they would feel there is potential true benefit to going all out. There are way too many substantiated examples of such abuse in the grapevine (as well as too many amazing untapped workers in the ranks) to ignore.

    Pros

Steady work, layoffs are not common.

    Cons

Don't feel valued as an employee. Pay is low for what they are asking of a chemist. 12hr shifts.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich (More than a year)

    Pros

The schedule is very flexible in most departments. This would be a great job for someone who has responsibilities that keep them home during certain hours. Management is casual and approachable. No dress code to adhere to.

    Cons

I can only speak for the Dekalb facility. I've heard it's better at other locations.
Moral is extremely low. I can't think of a single employee who has faith in the company or loves their job. The conditions are horrible. Crazy hot in the summer! Be prepared to work in areas that are 90+ degrees for hours at a time. I am really bothered by all the asbestos in the building. Counter tops, bench hoods, etc. The company doesn't want to spend the money to renovate this facility or remove the asbestos, despite Dekalb being one of their major cash-cows.
In short, don't take this job if you don't have to. Seriously. I have been job hunting since the day I started.

    Advice to Management

Focus some money on making the employees comfortable and happy. Turnover is expensive.

    Cons

Employees treated like children, and not professionals.
    Employees treated like "your replaceable"
    politics determine your future
