I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich (More than a year)

    Pros

The schedule is very flexible in most departments. This would be a great job for someone who has responsibilities that keep them home during certain hours. Management is casual and approachable. No dress code to adhere to.

    Cons

I can only speak for the Dekalb facility. I've heard it's better at other locations.
Moral is extremely low. I can't think of a single employee who has faith in the company or loves their job. The conditions are horrible. Crazy hot in the summer! Be prepared to work in areas that are 90+ degrees for hours at a time. I am really bothered by all the asbestos in the building. Counter tops, bench hoods, etc. The company doesn't want to spend the money to renovate this facility or remove the asbestos, despite Dekalb being one of their major cash-cows.
In short, don't take this job if you don't have to. Seriously. I have been job hunting since the day I started.

    Advice to Management

Focus some money on making the employees comfortable and happy. Turnover is expensive.

    Cons

    The pay is just ok

    Advice to Management

The job is ok, I love my co-workers, but the pay is pretty low compared to other jobs in the same or similar fields.

    I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work-life balance. With the coming acquisition by Merck KGaA, things may improve.

    Cons

Terrible pay, mediocre benefits, unclear advancement path, poor culture, low employee morale. Management style is very stagnant, it is extremely difficult to achieve any type of change, even on the most trivial level.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better, they're by far your most valuable resource. A $100 annual bonus (before tax) for all FTEs? Frankly, that's demoralizing. Better communication from upper management to employees is needed. Invest properly in your R&D - proper investment and modernization of equipment is required if you want to make new products!

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible company with approachable management and room for growth. Plenty of opportunities to be challenged and learn the business. Internal promotion/job movement is encouraged. Very stable company with stellar financial health. Global opportunities are abundant. Excellent 401k program.

    Cons

Pay is somewhat below market typically (especially for such an extremely profitable company), and raises are relatively marginal, even for promotions (sometimes comically so), forcing employees to seek opportunities with other companies to get the increase they desire. Vacation is only average. Tuition reimbursement could be better. Some areas of company suffer from trying to stretch resources too thinly, burning out resources. Not enough emphasis on finding and retaining top talent.

    Advice to Management

Do more to retain top performers and talent. Give better pay and raises. Don't force your best employees to leave the company in order to get a market-competitive wage.

    Pros

Highly professional environment, cohesion between the departments, flexibility with scheduling work around life

    Cons

Contract positions last for years with little to no intentions of being hired permanently, Cafe food is lacking in taste and healthier options

    Advice to Management

Provide contract employees with clear direction and a time line on how they can permanently join the SIAL team and feel valued while also reaping the benefits as a full time employee.

Pro's are the 401K which consists of 4.25% employer contribution (even if you don't contribute), and 50% matching up to 6%.

    Cons

    EXTREME MICRO-MANAGING
Employees treated like children, and not professionals.
    Employees treated like "your replaceable"
    politics determine your future

    Fast-growing and fast-paced
    Exciting projects

    Cons

    Stressful deadlines
