Really poor upper management. How do you go from $770 mil in sales to 500 ml in 1 year.

    Advice to Management

Worst Board of Directors ever assembled in the history of IT Industry.

    Pros

Interesting HPC Solutions to develop with customers....

    Cons

Company is in very dire shape, it was oversold to me....I don't
see how they stay in business, pay Sales Reps, Management way to much
compensation on such small revenues SCARY!!!

    Advice to Management

Go private or find a buyer for the company or reduce head count even more and force
employees to take another pay cut!

I worked at Silicon Graphics International full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good co-workers, potentially interesting problems

    Cons

Management was completely clueless. The primary problem was that products were developed as slideware with little or no control over what was promised. Then, having promised the sky, moon, and stars, the pressure was on to build something -- but what that something was changed almost at whim. This meant software that attempted to target constantly changing platform requirements and uncontrollable pie-in-the-sky goals.

    Advice to Management

At this point it's probably obviated, since SGI shut the local office down, but in general, find a focused idea of your product, build it, and THEN make promises.

    Pros

Great people, great customers very poor management and no business process. Product quality is declining rapidly.

    Cons

Poor, autocratic management that has no respect for the employees. The standard answer to complainers these days is 'If you don't like it then leave.' This totally misses the point that employees have made investments in SGI also.

    Advice to Management

Cut the management overhead to reduce costs. Start listening to what employees have to say. Develop some respect for others in the company and come to the realization that you are not the only valuable employees in the company.

    Pros

It is great place to work. Friendly atmosphere. People are good to work with. You can learn a lot from the technical staff here.

    Cons

The company does not have any clear long term vision. Their main goal seems to be to improve sales, but they have no cohesive strategy.

    Advice to Management

Look at other technology companies in the field and consider how they are adapting to a rapidly changing environment.

    Pros

A small company provides you with the ability to work across multiple business groups and meet people through out the company. The company has a clear direction that is discussed openly.

    Cons

Room for growth is limited. You need to take your time in order to establish yourself and your reputation before being able to make an impact.

    Pros

When joining Silicon Graphics inc's visualization group, I was impressed by the future vision on visualization products, and the road map.

    Cons

Once acquired by Rackable, everything changed. No more supports on visualization products. Cutting payment and planed to shift all job to oversea.

    Advice to Management

Can you image how difficult to visit 50 customers world wide in 3 months? Could the number become 100 next Q?

    Pros

....,hope they make the turn around.
Very nice, helpful and talented colleagues. Very interesting varied work. You have the opportunity to work very independently and responsibly.
Still great products, especially for the HPC market. SGI has still a very competent engineering team for their hardware and software products.

    Cons

Unfortunately, SGI has lost the original spirit. The staff has always been adapted to the declining revenues. This results in dissatisfied customers. Permanent change of strategies.
The influence of local management on the strategic direction is virtually non-existent. Relatively frequent changes in sales and also in management.

    Advice to Management

More focus to the customer and treat the employees as an important resource.
The employees make a big difference to the competitors.
