I worked at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-paid hourly so as a lower level employee (staff 1 & 2) your total compensation is pretty good but gets worse as you move up because of small company bonuses
    -some smart and friendly co-workers
    -financial support for PE licensing
-work / life balance isn't too bad depending on the project

    Cons

-Small cash bonuses and no matching contributions to 401k. SGH prides itself on profit sharing contributions to your 401k but that's smoke in mirrors because the total dollar value is roughly the same as if they paid you a fair cash bonus and matched your 401k contributions like a normal company. Ultimately you are probably a little worse off at SGH because that profit sharing money is tied up in a retirement account and tied to a vesting schedule.
-SGH claims they work on amazing, challenging, and unique projects when it really depends on which principal / group you work for. Realistically there's probably 1 of these projects every 2-3 years across the entire company of 500+ employees, so don't count on it. Most of the work is small projects like dunnage framing, stair infills, reviewing other engineer's work, and lintel design. The firm's website is not representative of the projects at all - limited new construction and virtually no infrastructure work.
-While there are some within the firm who try to innovate and improve work products / workflow there is an adverse attitude from the top because of the firm's extreme conservative nature, lack of R&D investment, and resistance to change.
-SGH tries to spread this idea that it is by far and away the greatest place to work. Some employees seem to agree and push this cult-like agenda on others (most likely because you need to for promotions). In reality it is a slow moving engineering firm with no major perks (you don't get paid for lunch and learns so you would be better off working than taking a free lunch)
-Every single thing you do (even an email) has to be reviewed by so many people so many times it becomes counter productive and doesn't add value for clients. Principals review reports they know nothing about to simply change words or the phrasing of a sentence.

    Advice to Management

-Truly assess whether some things are done to serve clients and add value or simply to satisfy SGH internally
-Try to keep up with technological progress or else the business will fail
-Less micromanaging / give employees some free range to innovate and good things may come

I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good local management, that works to have an efficient office. Some variance in work. Company provides support to obtain PE.

    Cons

Long hours, no work-life balance despite whatever you are told, less income than anywhere else. Long long long hours. They always hang the prospect of making it to the top over your head while they are dependent on you slaving away for years, sacrificing life, to get there. During that time, they line their pockets. This corporation is run by the upper-level employees, and so they look out for their financial interests foremost. Everything else is a far distant third.

Raises are being decreased, people being let go at astounding rates even during a booming economy. The reasons behind all these decisions are never made clear.

    Advice to Management

Stop firing. Stop being opaque about decisions that are made. End the culture of shaming those who leave.

I worked at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits, flexible hours, some nice people, use as a platform for the next career move but don’t stay long term

    Cons

Upper management will make you work for free (ask you not to bill time to project so budget doesn’t get impacted, not to bill time to overhead so higher ups don’t find out) - those people will get promoted instead of having action taken against them, sexist, boring work.

    Advice to Management

Need culture and value upgrades to reflect current times.

    Pros

If you want to grow and be challenged this is the company to work for. You are surrounded by the best people in the industry.
    Great benefit package and salary.

    Cons

Projects could be very demanding. Sometimes you work 12 hours a day for a week, and expect to work some weekends. Not all managers appreciate your hard work and long hours, some managers always want more.

    Advice to Management

Not all employees work 40 hours a week. The bonus should clearly state the extra amount given for the extra hours worked. It appears all staff get the same bonus. The bonus should be weighted heavily on extra hours worked and it is not.

    Pros

-Great salary for the industry and top notch benefits. Salary is hourly, so the pay reflects any extra hours put in.
-Good company culture with quality people
-Nice variety between office and field work to keep things interesting

    Cons

It takes a certain personality to enjoy the work we do, so it is not for everyone.

I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

SGH is a good company to work for. Provides great benefits and a good compensation package. For the most part works on a diverse portfolio of design, investigation, and rehabilitation building structures projects. Has offices throughout the US.

    Cons

Takes a long time to advance. Sometimes there is poor communication with expectations between staff and management. The culture is money driven and can feel very old school in its principles.

I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a consulting firm that does great work. Engaged and knowledgeable co-workers. The needs and goals of the employees is a high priority of management. Many interesting projects to work on. The company invests in their workers.

    Cons

There are lots of interesting projects, but there are also many that can be a bit of a drag. Consulting work requires a particular frame of mind and personality. It is not for everyone.

I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Diversity of work
-Design, Investigation, Litigation, Rehabilitation, and Preservation work (most companies silo employees to one )
-ability to work on big name projects even as a young staff
-conservative company that offers job security
-Most people are incredible to work with
-SGH encourages and supports staff to do nearly anything they are capable of

    Cons

-Big projects tend to get repetitive if you get stuck on one
-Constantly have to deal with adverse relationships (with those you need to work with, namely contractors)
-Management sometimes plays favorites (its great if your a favorite)
-Promotions and raises are unclear; the expectations for people promotions are inconsistent, especially between offices

    Advice to Management

Strive to do the most interesting work in the industry, do not settle for projects that just bring in money. This work is tiresome and unfulfilling to staff who run the projects.

Set standards for each promotion level or explicitly state that its not the same. What you tell staff and what you do is inconsistent

Be respectful of staff time on some of these projects you ask them to do (i.e. inspections, litigation projects more than an hour away, strenuous work, etc.)
