I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc (More than a year)

    Pros

This is a difficult industry to work in - completely client driven and billable hours are our lifeblood. That creates a pretty tough environment to maintain work-life balance. That said, Simpson Gumpertz and Heger does it better than most. I have worked at other organizations in this industry, and this company is far more caring about their employees than most. Some of the best benefits in the business - the profit sharing alone represents an amazing investment in the employees. The company's commitment to (and investment in) the learning and development of their employees is substantial. You get paid for every hour you work at all levels of the organization including the most senior, which is rare. They are going through a leadership transition and have executed it remarkably well.

Growing company, profitable company, widely regarded as among the best in the business, deeply care about employees - what's not to love? The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because of the industry - you can't be Google in professional services, the money and time just isn't there.

    Cons

Some growing pains around how we are going to maintain the culture as we continue to grow.

As with pretty much every technology company, finding good people managers is a challenge.

Even though it's inherent in the industry and not exclusive to SGH, it's a really tough industry to work in. You can build a tremendous (and lucrative) career in consulting, but it's not easy.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, but perhaps increase the level of communication and supervisor training.

I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, challenging work with colleagues that are some of the best in the building technology/preservation technology/building science field, flexible hours, amazing and social colleagues, understanding and reasonable senior staff.

As a Staff I and II, every day is different and varies between office work (reports, modeling, drawings, meetings) and field work (construction administration, field investigations, surveying). Project types and scope of work are also varied so that getting bored is a challenge!

Lots of potential to grow and succeed. The tools to advance within the company are easily available and the company as a whole focuses on your career and future. Lunchtalks to help share knowledge among the company are given regularly. The company provides lots of support to help you obtain your PE and to help you meet the educational requirements to maintain it.

Colleagues are friendly and social, and often arrange get-togethers (volunteer events, social outings, and sports).

    Cons

Work-Life balance is in your hands and it is up to you to limit the late nights in the office. However, if you set reasonable limits/boundaries, they will be respected by your colleagues and senior staff.

    Advice to Management

Working here is a pleasure. Thank you!

I worked at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Dedicated employees, good benefits, really knowledgeable engineers, diverse types of work, great office locations. Great profit sharing and 401k. High expectations for high performers. Hourly pay so you get paid for the actual hours worked. Competitive compensation. Company has a good vision and values. Glenn is a good leader and knows what matters.

    Cons

Not a family friendly culture. Very little social interaction or culture at all. Too tolerant of sub-par work performance for long time employees. Office doesn't close during snow storms and you can't use sick time. Long hours. No maternity/paternity benefits. When travel is required, employees are expected to pay for flight, hotel, expenses and get reimbursed = financial strain.

    Advice to Management

Some feel-good fringe benefits would go a long way. Treat employees like humans with families instead of numbers. Change work/life balance expectations to adapt to the new generations of employees. Glenn is great but the future is not so bright.

I have been working at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is extremely competitive (401K match has been 15% of salary for the last several years, great insurance, year-end bonus equates to about two weeks of salary).

    Cons

Too much responsibility for the company's success is placed on technical staff, while not enough is placed on operational staff (MarComm, research/analytics, BD, PR, etc.). Tech staff is basically forced to forego a personal life if they want to succeed, while operational staff have no path forward in the company, and are seen as only being there to support decisions made by tech staff. The new CEO in 2016 may - but likely will not - make a difference.

    Advice to Management

Place more responsibility - and credit - for the company's success on business operations staff, and re-structure that side of the business to reward high performance. Give a voice to Operations, and move toward a culture where technical staff are free to do great work rather than having to bring in business to succeed. Business operations and technical staff should be parallel, and should contribute equally to the company's success.
