I have been working at Sinai Health System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Caregivers truly care for the patients they support. Most are here for the right reasons.

    Cons

Leadership does not give lower level employees information of current system goals. No clear information associated to health of organization, but messages point out doom-and-gloom. Trying to use technology to solve problems that are organizational/operational

    Advice to Management

Go to training. Learn how to lead an effective meeting. Support staff in their desire to self improve within their organization to allow opportunities to move up.

    Pros

A place that walks the talk when it comes to Making Lives Matter and taking care of the communities they serve!

    Cons

Reimbursement from the state makes it hard to procure necessary equipment. High turnover in some leadership roles. I do maintain a high level of respect for the c-suite team.

    Advice to Management

Take time to listen and genuinely care about their teams.

I worked at Sinai Health System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to help vulnerable people, and make a positive impact on medically under-served communities.

    Cons

The organizational culture devalues employee concerns. Leadership pays lip service to “work-life balance,” but you should expect to work long hours, and then attend a public event on your day off. You will be expected to perform well without adequate financial and staff resources. You will find some of the infrastructure is crumbling due to lack of funds. You might get laid-off due to financial crises; a director who had relocated from out of state to work there got laid-off recently, just eight months after starting his position. At the same time, they also laid-off good people who'd been with the organization for 20 or more years. The organization has announced that it's closing its children’s hospital, which probably means more layoffs.

    Advice to Management

The organization's leadership has failed to execute an effective strategy to improve the quality of care and to reduce hospital readmissions, leading Medicare to reduce reimbursement. Talk is cheap: Execute. Look at what organizations such as Advocate Health Care are doing and copy them.

    Pros

A lot of patients are very troubled since they are in a low income community & you will be put in a lot of random situations to grow professionally.

    Cons

Many nurses dont want to be there. Their passion for nursing turned into a money making machine & they arrive like they don't want to work there.

    Advice to Management

They should go on different units and see how the nurses are treated by other nurses and staff. It should be an enjoyable place but many nurses don't want to do their job and cause a lot of negative tension on the units.

    Pros

It's a great place to get experience. You see everything there. Depending on your manager, it is easy to transfer to other units for more/different work experience.

    Cons

The patient load can be heavy a lot of times. You talk to management about it being too heavy and the acuity too high, but they don't do anything to change it.
It's often hard to find the equipment/supplies you need to do your job.

    Advice to Management

Don't just look at the census, also look at the acuity of the patients when staffing units.
