I worked at Sinai Health System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The mission would be a pro except that the organization lacks the financial resources and capabilities to fulfill it.

    Cons

The organization is in chaos overall; turnover at the management level is very high thus projects remain unfinished; layoffs are frequent; quality of care is subpar; the infrastructure is decrepit.

    Advice to Management

The board of directors should clean house.

I have been working at Sinai Health System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

working at a safety net hospital has a high level of gratification from the work you do, high likelihood of upward mobility for hard workers, system works to recognize top performers

    Cons

As a safety net Sinai is very resource constrained-- building are older, problems have to be very bad to be fixed in a short period of time
very high turnover rates and limited training for people taking over the roles, lack of consistency between departments as a result

    Advice to Management

take care of the people already in the system so you don't have to replace them

  6. "Horrible leadership"

    Pros

The community and patients - they need this hospital to improve!

    Cons

Senior leadership needs a complete change. They are so disconnected from reality of what it is like to work for this System. The CEO has dragged the system down over past several years. No compassion or understanding for the difficult work done everyday by caring staff.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the old guard and start over with senior leadership team. The newer VP’s that were brought in over last few years with new and innovative caring ideas are all gone already.

I worked at Sinai Health System full-time

    Pros

I really can’t think of any.

    Cons

Filthy work environment. You must learn to live with roaches. Clueless management. If you’re a minority, you won’t impress anyone and you’ll always be taken for granted. Unless you are able to lay a golden egg and pull a rabbit out of a hat at the same time.

    Advice to Management

Stop being star struck by a handful of select employees.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Sinai Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very old facility serving poor and sometimes violent neighborhood. Management is working hard to improve continuing nursing education and to recruit and maintain high-quality employees. In some ways, very supportive atmosphere. General atmosphere is very friendly and much of upper management seems very dedicated to the hospital and its mission.

    Cons

Starting salary for nurses somewhat below average. Some floors have a very nasty, almost toxic, culture with little cliques and a lot backbiting (even within cliques.) Many of the nurses seem bitter and burned out.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. Rome wasn't built in a day and the improvements made so far are paying off.
