I have been working at Singapore Management University part-time

    Pros

Flexible working time, you are allowed to choose which job you are available based on your time table.

    Cons

The payment is not very high. Pre-event briefing is needed, which will not count towards the working hours. You will not be involved in the planning of the events.

    Advice to Management

I appreciate the opportunities given by the school departments, which allowes me to work part-time in school.

I have been working at Singapore Management University full-time

    Pros

    1. Central location
    2. Good benefits and medical coverage for employees, spouse and children

    Cons

    1. Very strong hierarchical culture. As other reviewers already mentioned, the power distance is too high and there is a top-down approach to decision-making.
    2. Isolation in the workplace. For instance, there is no lunch with colleagues, no dinners or celebrations/annual events in the department, no activities whatsoever, office doors are closed and several colleagues are not even coming to the office for many months.
    3. Uninspiring for academics, as colloquia/talks from visiting speakers (even broadly related to one's field) are a rare phenomenon.
    4. Too much politics and toxic work culture.
    5. No trainings and opportunities for further education.
    6. A lot of bureaucracy and unnecessary administration.
    7. Unclear expectations for promotion and tenure.
    8. Short-term and disrespectful mentality (e.g., academics who get invited for a job interview (and may even come from the 'other end of the world' for this) do not even get a generic job rejection email, if they are not selected for the job).
