I have been working at Singapore Management University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place for living. School has a lot of fundings and industry-related research projects.

    Cons

The school is relatively new. It is hard for PhD student to find academic job in Singapore.

    Advice to Management

Should be more focusing on post grad research programme, and more support from the university level

I have been working at Singapore Management University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Location (Transportation, Food, and its in town!), staff benefits, and there is a unique vibrancy that is organic to this university.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the turnover for certain administrative offices in this university is faster than one flips prata at your local coffee-shop. A not-too-long change near the top enacts a top-down effect on the whole organisation. I'll just leave it at that. Promises for progression, turns out to be louder than an empty vessel.

It depends on which office you are attached to as each unit has a different culture. What would help for you decide whether to accept your offer at SMU is to really research and check out the culture of your future unit, and to see beyond the "pretense and niceties" during your interview sessions.

    Advice to Management

Senior Management needs to reconsider the quality of middle-upper management they bring in. It is easy to reconcile the fact you're bring in a smart person, but if he/she lacks empathy, EQ, and the ability to connect with people, you will soon figure the opportunity cost of doing so is detrimental to the general morale of the organisation. Do listen to your staff for what's happening on the ground. Do not avoid taking necessary action.

I have been working at Singapore Management University full-time

    Pros

Location, location, location- but a university is not a hotel. There should be more to it than great location -sigh

    Cons

There have been ridiculous promotions and hiring. People without decent academic performance were promoted to full professorship. No transparency at all, no channels for appeal, no communication for explanation. favoritisms here and there.
