I worked at Skadden Arps part-time

    Pros

Building is secure and security responds to queries right away. (Outside company, of course.)

    Cons

Everything else. They are not honest with new hires. They make false promises. We are monitored even as to how many trips to the bathroom. Cannot step away from desk unless you make a call to tell the front that you are stepping away. This applies to Administrative staff, not attorneys or upper-management.

    Advice to Management

Advice is useless at this point. The pay is great for a reason - so nobody will complain.

I worked at Skadden Arps full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, 401K, some really nice people.

    Cons

Micromanaged, no communication about changes taking effect. You learn about changes AFTER you've done something that doesn't fit the new profile.

    Advice to Management

Take time to really sit down with your employees and get to know them. Utilize their skills and interests to make their job more productive.

I worked at Skadden Arps (More than a year)

    Pros

Modern offices and a subsidized cafeteria.

    Cons

Rather nasty group of management (consisting of mostly young and very inexperienced women who do not know the first thing about managing and speaking to subordinate staff). The firm also enforces extremely strict, rigid and somewhat humiliating policies (for example, you must be at your desk and ready to work at 9:30 a.m. (even if you worked late the night before or have a commuting issue, etc.) and you must account for any bathroom or other small breaks in your daily time entries). Don't even think about asking for a sudden vacation or sudden time off due to a medical emergency, as you will have to jump through hoops to get approval (and in all likelihood will be bullied to work regardless of your personal situation). Be advised you will be unable to borrow off your 401K plan. Overall, Skadden was one of the most pompous, strict, and arrogant firms I ever encountered (management and attorneys alike).

    Advice to Management

Learn how to communicate with dignity and respect, and treat the staff like the highly educated, professionals they are. Also, be cognizant of the type of work assignments you give to legal assistants. For example, make it a priority to know your staffs' unique, individual skill-set and level of work experience before giving work assignments to them (i.e., don't improperly assign junior-level work to senior-level staff, and vice versa). Learn how to properly communicate to the staff regarding new or sudden updates to firm policies and procedures, and try to watch the condescending, nasty tone when communicating with staff. It will only adversely affect you as well as the firm's reputation in the long run.

I have been working at Skadden Arps full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work/ life balance (in Accounting), benefits (Plenty of PTO, 401K, etc.) Departments are well staffed so there's backup. Everyone wants to help each other for the most part. Very professional atmosphere.

    Cons

No room for growth. Good place to retire but if you're still developing your career in Accounting, it's going to be hard here.

    Cons

Face time is important (even though attorney development and recruiting says otherwise)
    No boundaries
Little visibility on pipeline from associate level
Review process is slow and inconsequential
