Excellent Pay, Support and Resources Undermined by Terrible Culture

      Pros

Market salary and all the support and resources you could need. I have since worked at other law firms and they've paled in comparison. The billable requirement was pretty low when I was there (1600 hours). It has since increased (I believe it is now 1800 hours) but remains lower than that of most firms. Further, pro bono counts toward your billables. Generous vacation and sick time if you dare to take it. Great benefits. Highly reputable.

      Cons

All the typical horrors of big law. Long hours (despite low target billables). Poor management skills and very little management training. Everything is a manufactured emergency that requires you to monitor your email at all hours of the day and night. Lots of passive aggressive behavior. Associates police each other. Should you opt to leave the office before 8 expect to develop a reputation for being less than engaged. And dare not refuse an assignment. Regardless of how much work you have on your plate you will likely be labeled 'difficult.' Very hierarchical. It can be challenging to get substantive work and meaningful experience when you're a junior associate.

      Friendly staff/attorneys, stale management

Apr 19, 2019 - Office Services Assistant in Palo Alto, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Support staff and attorneys are (mostly) nice. Generous PTO, good benefits.

      Cons

Long hours are expected, and if you refuse to stay you are looked down upon. No work/life balance. Most of the managers are always in a bad mood, really negative to be around and bring the energy down.

Best kept secret in town: Skadden is a really great place to work!

Aug 22, 2008 - Attorney in New York, NY

      Pros

SASMF is a very humane place - best kept secret in NYC. There's no crap about them. In the legal community, if you say you work at Skadden, you get a lot of eye-rolls, but I am happy to report that it is really good to work there. The main reason for this is there is a level of respect accorded to all - they implicitly acknowledge you must be the best of the best to work there, so there is no second-guessing of our work. It is assumed it is good, and that assumption actually makes the work good, much better than micromanagement does.

      Cons

Long hours, but that is true of all Big Law firms. I am not averse to long hours for adequate compensation so that is not a problem for me at all. I lateraled there, so some of the internanlprocesses take some getting used to. Given its size, Skadden is used to doing things a certain way, and we have to learn its ways, not the other way around. I think they could do with a little flexibility in this respect. I still get a little confused about who I have to call if I have a personal question: HR? Benefits? Someone else? Still not sure!
