I have been working at Skanska full-time

    Pros

Lots of work to do, lots of support and training available, interesting global work exchange program.

    Cons

First paycheck is manual and mailed via usps. If you start at the beginning of the pay period you go almost a month without pay. Also benefits are below par for the area: 2 weeks vacay a year, 5 sick days. The standard in PDX is now 3 weeks and if you're sick, stay home (within reason; the alternative is to offer 20 days pto)

    Advice to Management

Up the pto and get us our first paycheck ON payday.

I have been working at Skanska full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has many large and interesting construction projects.

    Cons

The current IT shared service department is hardly able to stay up to speed with the business, has very little work which is valued by the business partners, and has no real strategy or direction of how to improve. There are huge holes in management and leadership skills across all functions which just perpetuates the problems. Low staff engagement and moral comes from low professional career plan opportunities, lack of purpose, and not having confidence in leadership.

    Advice to Management

Change entire IT leadership team and start with some new thoughts.

    Pros

Globally recognized, large company can win projects easily, lots of resources. Some really good people working there.

    Cons

Way too political and almost gossipy, long uncompensated hours, women are overlooked and ignored, certain management only knows how to intimidate not motivate. Those Same Managers will listen to gossip about someone's work habits and assume it's true, not follow through and discuss with that person or give them an opportunity to confront their accusers. It's never professional to talk about someone's work performance with their co-workers but not with them............especially when the co-workers are saying that what he's heard is inaccurate.

    Advice to Management

Stop managing with your ego's and take some courses or something...

I have been working at Skanska as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lengthy exposure to all aspects of civil, very hands on, versatile tasks

    Cons

Many of the employees did not work to their potential because their superiors believed "The work was a lot harder than it is"

    Advice to Management

    change the above
