I worked at Skanska USA full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

People - they have great people. Culture - maybe it's the west coast or Norwegian culture instilled in the business but it's strong. Diversity - right before I left, I started to see more women in key roles. always room for improvement but historically, the AEC industry has been male dominated for years so it's nice to see women taking these roles Leadership - changed but for the better. work hard - what you put...

    Cons

Compensation - I left for a more money (but i can't say it was worth it) and i didn't get along with local leadership. I'll mention though, the grass isn't greener on the other side. The culture and people are much more different and old school where i am now. Change - as a publicly traded company, they have changes they made. They're not afraid to make changes.

I worked at Skanska USA full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Large company so for the moment feel confident I will have a job. A lot of very hard working talented people and project teams.

    Cons

Going through a lot of non positive change. Leadership is a revolving door and has become very political - promotion based on who you know not performance. The fun is gone. Sales, revenue and profitability down. See 2018 4th quarter results. Just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hours are long and the project teams don’t get much support. A company heading in a bad direction.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach - servant leadership. Remember our business is building buildings so reconnect to the projects. Get back to our values. Embrace, promote and act on our values. These are not just sales tools. Promote and support innovation and diversity. These seemed to be forgotten.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Skanska USA full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Lots of really good employees and leaders in the company (PCI - separate from the construction group that used to be ICI). Engineering company is routinely profitable and tries to be progressive with technology.

    Cons

Lots of inefficiency born out of poor long-term strategy.

    Advice to Management

Greater commitment to process and tools with long-term strategy in mind would allow for employees to really get better at their jobs.

I worked at Skanska USA full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Professional Environment Decent benefits and paid time off Great professional development programs (if you are invited to participate)

    Cons

Elitist environment and hard to get ahead if you are an ethnic minority, unless you have a 'GodFather'. Lack of diversity in management and executive positions. Lack of respect for ethnic minorities. Diversity efforts focus on subcontractor participation in projects and employing WOMEN in construction. What about your workforce?? In NY the melting pot of the US - UNACCEPTABLE! They do hire ethnic minorities but...

      Pros

Large company perks, compensation is best when with company for a while and company is overall profitable, complex projects, interesting work, development of skills.

      Cons

Poor advancement options, sometimes just another fish in a big pond/big company.

    • Lack of diversity. Long hours, low pay.

I have been working at Skanska USA for more than 2 years

      Pros

Benefits are average. Vacation time is average.

      Cons

Very poor work life balance. Long hours are expected without commensurate pay. A 55 hour work week at 40 hours pay is the norm. There are not a lot of women/minorities in the leadership roles.

      Advice to Management

Diversify your talent network. Actively recruit women and minorities. Consider that employees have lives outside of work. If you expect people to work a mandatory 10 hour day in a salaried position, make the salary reflect the hours. No one wants to work for free.
