I have been working at Skanska USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Investment in education career development; good community of people who care about the project and company; supervisors responsive to expressed needs; provides welcomed challenges that push me just beyond the limits of comfort - personal progress; fair(reasonable) salary/bonuses; high coverage medical/dental/vision; fair (reasonable) retirement options; incentives for long term employees; prospects for significant career advancement with hard work; options for moving between business divisions and working abroad. Work hard, but feel appreciated. Overall, I love working for Skanska.

    Cons

Company culture in Civil West can feel a little conventional compared to other industries, other construction companies and even other Skanska divisions. Headquarters IS encouraging change toward more progressivism. However, construction culture runs deep. Change is slow, but it is happening.

Projects are large and risky. Environment can feel fearful in times when stress levels are high. This can be motivating for me, but may not be for others.

    Advice to Management

Talk about company culture more (not grips, but observations and ideas). Aside from formal operational changes that can be made to progress culture, merely fostering more discussion about it will help to unveil differing viewpoints, promote trust and tolerance, and motivate people to notice company culture, in general – all of which is progressive.

I have been working at Skanska USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Encouraged to continue growth and knowledge in civil operations

    Cons

Minimal perks, not as personable as other competing companies, not many centralized operation locations (will need to be willing to move with each project this company wins)

I have been working at Skanska USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great global brand
Committed to shareholders, customers and employees
Leverages their Civil, Building, commercial development and infrastructure development businesses for advantage.
    Outstanding people
    Good training and development programs
    Excellent benefits.

    Cons

    Constant leadership turnover
Promotes a Great Boss culture yet doesn't promote great bosses to Senior leadership roles.
Burdensome risk management policies and processes. Doesn't trust employees and teams. To every problem there will be a follow-up policy and procedure.
Despite talking a good game not very innovative and diverse.
Safety is about paperwork and audits. Most safety professionals and superintendents spend all their time in the trailer pushing paper.

    Advice to Management

Shift focus from risk management policies, procedures, processes to developing the best people, putting them in the right places and giving them the tools and support they need to be successful. Trust your people, eliminate non productive administrative tasks and free them up. Get out of the box and be innovative. The world is passing you by.

A top GC in the US and internationally. Interesting projects. Great opportunities to learn through working on these great projects. Good benefits and competitive salaries/bonuses.

I worked at Skanska USA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits were acceptable and the overall company values were upheld. The projects available to work on and learn from would set you on the fast track to understanding the industry.

    Cons

No support to fresh graduates that would set them up to succeed in such a demanding industry. No warning of any kind as an employee if you were not performing to their standards except with a termination notice.

    Advice to Management

Need to get a grasp on what they expect out of their employees and need to be sure to communicate with them. Even when checking in on your job/task status management might have no idea where you will be going next.
