I worked at Skidmore College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The student/faculty/staff community, benefits are good, plenty of free events on campus that you can attend, food and coffee easily available on campus and just minutes from your desk, downtown Saratoga is also just minutes away, free gym access.

    Cons

Too much politics for all positions, HR not very helpful, lower tiered employees don't have a true voice, older leadership stuck in old ways, pay scale isn't great compared to other jobs outside of higher ed, the hierarchy within departments is very rigid.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is to listen to newer employees and take them seriously. The HR site claims to be an advocate for both employer and employee and that simply isn't true, they advocate for the employer and not so much for employee. I started work there expecting to be there for several years and have a great career, but after 2 years of employment I didn't feel I had any opportunities to move forward, and I was being stiff armed at every chance I took to advance my career. I approached my leadership and HR for help, instead of guiding me to take the right steps to help my situation, they did a lot of head nodding and lots of "yes", then nothing followed. The non leadership employees need to feel protected and encouraged.

I worked at Skidmore College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I had a wonderful time working with Skidmore in various departments. I enjoyed the sense of community and team-oriented atmosphere. Despite different levels of employment, everyone in the team worked together and there was not really a sense of top-down management in a negative or hierarchical way.

    Cons

With many different departments, the silo effect can happen at Skidmore, but I think it's mitigated by strong advocates in all departments and cross-departmental collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Continue doing what you're doing! Thank you for listening to your employees. I really valued working at Skidmore. Thanks for creating such a great sense of community.
