I have been working at Skipton Building Society (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working with a great team, treating customers as "peopl e" and no pressure from Skipton to "mis-sell" Friendly atmosphere and wages not bad either! Hard work recognised

    Cons

Would rather work all day Saturday and have one day off through the week. Paperwork often duplicated which is really unnecessary.

    Advice to Management

Working on a Saturday morning sometimes does not suit customers needs. Perhaps working all day Saturday would be better and offer staff a day off through the week.

I worked at Skipton Building Society full-time

    Pros

Great offices with good facilities and mostly great people. Good benefits and a fun, pleasant working environment overall. Success is celebrated often.

    Cons

Lots is said internally - and externally - about company values but in reality there are many people demonstrating the opposite and continuing to get away with it by paying lip service. Management in certain areas fight against each other whilst appearing to be friends.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention and look beneath the surface. Don't only listen to what your managers are telling you. Of course they're going to tell you everything's ok if they themselves are the real problem.

    Pros

I have worked for the company for about 10 years and it is a fantastic organisation with very good culture. Good work life balance and real investors in people.

    Cons

The pay may not be on par with industry standards on some of the more specialised roles.

I worked at Skipton Building Society full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Overall they were not too bad, but the true Skipton was under Goodfellow and Scotter - now both retired. People were allowed to express themselves better under them. Afterwards it became a very closed shop.

    Cons

Had a habit of promoting Sales people over good Managers- if you sell sell sell you will get on, but as managers Sales people are awful. I was once passed over for promotion being told "you had a bad year a few years ago". Yes, but I came back from it and the guy above me was promoted based on under ONE year and was the worst manager I ever had.

When we were violently robbed we had to stay in branch with the police past 9pm and were back in the next day to open up. One HR woman came down who was ok but the Regional Manager turned up and within half an hour was asking how much we had sold that week!

They tend to favour the Northern offices and favourites get dug in like ticks regardless of the quality of work and their behaviour. Get your head down and work hard and you get ignored - you have to be IN.

Their yearly conferences for managers were an utter chore - sharing rooms and most people just getting plastered.

    Advice to Management

    Promote managers not sales people.

I have been working at Skipton Building Society full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are the best thing about the company from the branch managers downwards. Good network of people that you can talk too anytime.

    Cons

    Don't trust regional managers!
Everyone is expendable to the company.
They encourage good EOS feedback and to fill in best company to work for, we have to basically lie.
We are too target driven, it's all about sales no matter what we say to customers about a no pressure promise.
No career opportunity unless you live in skipton.

    Advice to Management

Really appreciate your staff - this goes to regional managers not branch managers. Don't think about staff as dirt.

    Pros

The feeling of belonging and having an important role to play in the success of the Society. At Skipton you really feel valued, and are playing an important role in customer satisfaction.
Great commute, continually improving benefits package, on site café and restaurant.

    Cons

Salary not as high as central Leeds, but improving.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!
