I have been working at Slalom Consulting full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The amount of effort the organization puts into its culture and people is commendable. The local model is fantastic (if you prefer to have dinner with family/friends most nights) and also means that you have more in common with clients (whom may shop or live where you do.) Project work is challenging and interesting, and there are lots of internal/community initiatives to get involved with if you crave more.

    Cons

The relatively flat organization means that if you crave frequent validation (in the form of a title change), this might not be the best place for you. There are lots of ways in which feedback is given/received, but it isn't always enough for those who are just getting started in their carrier. Otherwise, a fantastic place to work.

    Advice to Management

Focus on solving the challenge of providing some of the more junior team members a clear career path.

    Pros

Lots of US locations, but nothing in the way of furthering your career.

    Cons

Everyone, Product managers, people managers, CEOs are focused almost 99% on increasing profits, not making good software.

They claim there is a good work life balance. And maybe for consulting, this is true. But definitely not for the rest of the world.

    Advice to Management

Contribute to an open source project; Give your engineers time to influence the process.

    Pros

Autonomy, salary, office views, annual retreat

    Cons

Misguided Management, Poor Project Scoping, Ghosting Hours, Relentless focus on Utilization Rate, Slimy Sales Practices, Lack of Career Growth Opportunity, Mediocre Benefits (401 K match is terrible, health insurance is sub-par, maternity/parental benefits far behind industry standard, sabbatical program canceled).

Unless you're a programmer / engineer, there is little opportunity for you here.

    Pros

Work-life balance is part of the conversation
Great in-office perks, operations support, and events
    Nice people

    Cons

Some key work-life affordances are not there
    Some chaos
    401k match is low

    Advice to Management

Local was the key to starting a great thing, but bringing cross market coherence is going to take some work. This warranty a big reset in strategy, without losing the good.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Slalom Consulting as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    The people there are amazing.
Opportunities to attend weekly tech talks.
    Several free lunch events.
Several Nights out with the team.
Flexible hours as long as you met 40 hours a week and attended meetings.
The best Scrum Experience I have ever had.

    Cons

The pay is modest but nothing at all special for software.
Many days felt direction less, even when tasks were nailed down they weren't specific.
Getting up to speed took much longer than it should have.

    Advice to Management

Give interns more direction but also more incentive to stay and want to continue working, the tools to succeed like a formal book or a small project to get started

    Pros

The culture and the people are amazing, smart and great to get along with. The projects are meaningful for both consultant and the client.

    Cons

Sometimes consultants can be placed on a project in the suburbs which can result in long commutes if they live in the city.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. Do not lose focus on the things that are the reasons why Slalom is where it is today.

I worked at Slalom Consulting full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company culture, work-life balance. Scrum agile practiced regularly. The dev culture was low-key and relaxed without too many fires. Little overtime unless you really want to push for yourself. Work from home / remote work once a week is common, brown bags and happy hours. With consulting, whether you have fun at work depends a lot on landing the right project with the right team. Building a product for a small company with a lively team will make work much more fun than getting stuck on large boring healthcare mega-projects.

    Cons

Consulting projects were getting boring and repetitive. More health care, more slow-moving clients, more meetings, more testing iterations and slower dev cycles. Much of the project excitement depends on the landing the right client and right team. Quite political and small, so if you have a bad day, word spreads quickly.

The caveat with consulting is that it's best when all engineers are billable, which means that if you hit it out of the ballpark and complete a complex and challenging project with lots of visibility you may just end up on a boring test role for months until another billable client comes up.

    Advice to Management

Don't become Accenture when the going gets rough.

    Pros

Work with a lot of great people.

    Cons

Focus has shifted from great delivery of great solutions, to making the sale. Despite the fact that we have a market team of roughly 20, the Practice Leaders are being pushed much more than ever to sell, leaving little time for practice growth, people support. Mid-mgmt roles should be re-examined as there are too many hats being worn between sales (which is being emphasized as the most important by far), practice growth, people growth, internal initiatives, all while expected to be 65-100% utilized.

I have been working at Slalom Consulting full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Talented and profession consultants. The culture is warm, inviting, and inclusive. The perks like quarterly and annual off-site meetings are substantial. The client base looks strong and growing. People managers seem to truly care about your professional growth.

    Cons

Project assignments and scheduling are a challenge like it is at most consulting firms. The progression and requirements for promotion are not well understood like at many consulting firms.

    Advice to Management

Keep everyone informed and involved in the long term planning process. The roll out and effort around the three year vision was and is a step in the right direction. Also, keep reviewing and sharing the results from annual company surveys.
