I worked at Slant Six Games full-time

    Pros

Great culture and management. Great pay and benefits. Good projects to work on and highly talented co-workers, throw great parties.

    Cons

Sadly the company went out of business or I would still be working there. There were sometimes long hours but that's pretty standard in the game development industry.

    Advice to Management

Hard to give advice to a team that no longer exists. It would have been great if they could have kept the company going and found more projects.

I worked at Slant Six Games full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some nice folks work there and the company culture is positive.

    Cons

The company has yet to make a good game let alone a great one. Talented well meaning art team, with bad in house tools, and stubborn out dated tech. Well meaning management but with no passion or interest in the actual making of games, burnt out, and too nice to make the hard choices and not involved enough to make the right ones. Unfortunately lay offs are common here.

    Advice to Management

Get involved. Don't trust that the ship will sail itself.

I worked at Slant Six Games as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Slant Six Games is a very friendly and supportive studio. Everybody was very approachable and helpful with any questions or tasks that you needed support on.

The company provided a lot of perks that brought everybody together like a family, such as Beer Fridays accompanied by weekly updates of the project and the company news. Bonuses and compensation for work was very generous despite some tough situations the project faced. The team was very tight knit and social and our relationship continued after work hours on a regular basis.

SSG also gave lots of opportunities for people to step up and prove that they can do more than they were given, and be worthy of better work. They provided lots of opportunities for promotions and greater responsibilities on the game.

    Cons

The engine was in a very early stage of development and did not have a lot of features or support that is standard to the industry. The project was promised to the publisher at a very short development time which resulted in a lot of overtime. However, producers did their best to alleviate the negative effects with good management and scheduling.

    Advice to Management

It's a tough industry where consumer expectation is growing by the day. It's hard to aim for such large projects that carry such large expectations in such short time frames. If you're aiming for ownership of a strong and sustainable IP, aim for something solid, well built, and with low maintenance. Steam or iOS are great markets to look into.

Best of luck on your future projects!

I have been working at Slant Six Games full-time

    Pros

    - Generous to employees when money is available
    - Readily celebrates successes

    Cons

    - Not a good place to advance up the ladder, not committed to promote internally
    - Wrong people in management making decisions, little confidence in the ability of some of the managers

    Advice to Management

Check your egos at the door and let people with proven experience and ability run the show rather than those who lack the skill set to helm the direction of the company
