I worked at Sleep Number Corporation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very light supervision during the day as long as you stay on schedule.

    Cons

It's just you and 1 other person in a truck all day. So you better like that person or it's rough.

I worked at Sleep Number Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

If you enjoy getting out and seeing different cities, then this would be great for you. Having the freedom to speak to customers in their own homes and meeting a wide range of people.

    Cons

There are a number of challenges that come with being a Technician at Sleep Number. For one, finding hours and decent pay when the slow seasons come around is difficult to say the least. That’s not to say that it is your direct manager or supervisors fault that you are not getting paid, but the basis of the issue is that the techs are struggling when business is slow. It’s a double edged sword working in this... position. When it’s busy, don’t expect to see your family for a while and be prepared to work really late, and 6 days a week. When it’s slow, expect to find some other source of income for the 2-3 days that you don’t work or be willing to use your PTO that you have accrued. There is no in between, trust me. Another thing is that your supervisor will be absolutely swamped with work and will definitely try to help you but there is only one guy there to call for help. There are numbers to call should you run into an issue, but often times they don’t know what your talking about or the wait time is super long, or my favorite, they close office much earlier than when you actually get off of work. At that point your Supervisor is your only lifeline at 10:00pm when the poor guy should be sleeping and you should be too. Most of the workers didn’t see it that way and figured that’s his job, but when you need something from 6am-11pm he’s your guy. I wouldn’t want to be slave driven like that and work literally all day. Sleep Number has the potential to be great, but their ideas are backwards and never pan out the way that they’re supposed to. The way that things are executed in each market is different almost like everyone is winging it and seeing what works best.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your Technicians, create new positions (not just one trainer) to alleviate the work load on the supervisors so they can take care of US or at the very least Delivery related, and not something that someone else should be dealing with. Understand that this is how Techs make a living and that they need to have an income that will stop this job from being the revolving door that it is. Keep Techs in mind when... creating new policies (and absurdly heavy beds) and make sure they are trained in person not just over a training video that no one takes seriously.

I have been working at Sleep Number Corporation full-time

    Pros

Great Co workers and a really good fun job. Get to travel to new places good working atmosphere. Not to difficult to learn.

    Cons

The main con working here would have to be the pay. It's not the highest paying job and on top of that they will hire you on as a FULL TIME delivery employee and then only work you for maybe 20 to 25 hours a week if your lucky. I haven't worked 36 hours a week since I've been here. I have even had a week where I only worked 8 hours the entire week and like I said I'm a "full time" employee so yeah the pay doesn't... compensate for the lack of hours worked.

    Advice to Management

Get your delivery techs more hours or raise the pay to make up for the lack of hours.

I have been working at Sleep Number Corporation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good company, working through the problem areas that came with the new system. Seems to be operating efficient but not all quite there. But getting there. As a home delivery tech I work in a small market and receive little communication which isn't always a bad thing. I enjoy not having to be micromanaged like some areas/people have to.

    Cons

With the new reduction of storage units for techs to store mattresses we take from a customer or to place a customer order in storage I have to say this is not a good idea. I think I understand why they all were closed and it's not for the reason given to us...dishonest people are in every company and good communication is key for any market whether it's to the senior tech or the new regional manager position... keeping an eye on what goes where. I have received orders that were never scheduled for my route, but were scheduled the next week or two. Why are orders being sent out ahead of time only to get sent back? That happened to me three days in a row...the cost of sending the items back via freight cost more than what my unit costed. If it's happening to me...it's happening to others. I could care less if I have to send the freight back, but time is money and money is time. I try to save where I can and come up with ideas to decrease spending in my area when I can. I'm still seeing a tech in another area come within 30 minutes of my pickup location and doing deliveries... The worst is drive times. I got with my RC and field supervisor about an issue I saw on my route...I had to drive hour and a half south do a stop, go drive 2 and a half hours do a stop, then drive an hour and a half another stop, then head back to my home area which was an hour away and do two more stops...if we look at a map first was south of my dock, second was east of my dock, third was north of my dock. I pointed this out and was told to wait to see if a stop dropped off the next day...this is not he correct answer, I'm one person doing erroneous drive times and got 0 support by my RC. Field sup didn't respond but I'm sure he said something just not to me and that's fine. Luckily one of my stops didn't show up, showed up supposedly in another area on a different pro#. Which stopped me from having to deny two of my stops for being over 14hours. I don't mind the pay that came with it, but if I'm told to come up with ways to save money, and this happens. I can only do so much. So much cost cutting going on which I get it, this is a business and there needs to be profits, but at what cost? Going over DOT restrictions? That's a huge fine if I or another tech were to get stopped. But what does a grunt know?

    Advice to Management

Get with and listen to your techs...I've given out ideas and they have been heard, but not seeing any improvement as far as delivery routes. With the new implementation of allowing stores to set delivery dates/times. Allow them to set which area it goes to. It's too easy for a mapquest to see which area is closer. So instead of having techs drive 2 hours to do a stop and not have the closer tech do it when it's 30... min away. I work extremely close with my stores and let them know issues that pop up and I always make whatever I can happen and they have my support and I know I have theirs. This can also reduce work loads in large markets by allowing a medium or small market to nab a job or two. Or to alleviate a small market with one tech to allow another area with 2-4 to snag a job to allow them not such a long day. We all work as a team and that's when we can make the most money for our company and ourselves.

I worked at Sleep Number Corporation

    Pros

Working at Home Delivery was fun and rewarding. I met a lot of great customers and enjoyed being part of improving people's sleep experience. The products, although overpriced, are extremely comfortable.

    Cons

As an employee, I recieved very little support from management in helping the customer. I wanted to replace defective components for customers and was told not to or not given the parts to effectively do the job. Many customers expressed their dissatisfaction with customer service. Misinformation runs rampant. Between departments you could be told opposite things. Sleep Number seems to care about you up until... purchase, then makes it very difficult to get help, repair, or attention. The training I had was terrible. Training programs were being put in place throughout 2014, but focused on new hires, leaving current employees to fall behind. The product itself is inexpensively made and could be sold at a much lower price point. Upon my termination for accidental misuse of company property, they did not return personal items to me. After several attempts to get my stuff back (stuff I had brought from home to improve the customer experience) I was treated rudely, lied to, and threatened.

    Advice to Management

Hiring processes could use consistency so that you get a quality of employee that is currently lacking. Trust and communication between upper management and the field is sorely absent. Goals were not clearly defined, easily achieved, or shared by the General body of employees.

I worked at Sleep Number Corporation full-time

    Pros

No direct supervision good employee discounts on products decent benefits For the most part stress free job Mattresses come in pieces so there is minimal heavy lifting Overall good paying job (during sales times)

    Cons

Some weeks you would get under 20 hours in the Rochester NY region Work with temporary laborers through Labor Ready and you are forced to do all the driving (can travel up to 4 hours away) Freight company (Conway Freight) is late 85% of the time so you are behind the 8 ball all day trying to catch up and stay in delivery windows With no direct supervision it is hard to get a hold of management (closest manger is... in Pitssburgh PA)
