I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great commission structure. Competitive benefits. You are put through an extensive training class which will put you way ahead of the competition.

    Cons

Long work days. Some people are prone to lose focus during the slow times of the month or year.

    Advice to Management

Put more focus on employees that are under performing. Create a better bonus system for consistent performers.

I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity for excellent pay. advancement opportunity. management training. Sales training. ability to turn a job into a career. great rewards systems. additional perks. Monthly bonuses for sales positions. stability for top employees. Company Picnics. Mostly Employee friendly. understanding and forgiving when employees make honest mistakes that can be corrected through coaching and effort. pay for community service hours.

    Cons

rough work life balance. Management wants high levels of commitment, which is fine, but can lead to extended amounts of free time being given up to attend company functions or work on projects.
not understanding if a manager views an employee as not being "on board" or as a trouble maker. then the mistakes are treated differently and can be utilized to remove the employee from the company.

    Advice to Management

time devoted to the company can wear on employees. excellent company, but not everyone will want to make it their life, which should be acceptable and not frowned upon.

    Pros

The company has been great in the past, maybe it will again sometime. If you want to hold your nose and play games with upper management then you can get promoted very quickly...

    Cons

company keeps being bought with worse results every time. Micro managed to a point of absurdity, income drops every year

    Advice to Management

show that you actually value your employees. Stop expecting every customer that walks into the building to spend 5 to 10 thousand dollars, it's not realistic

I worked at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great friendships in co workers, can make a lot of money on busy holiday weekends, legitimate potential of 80k a year as a store manager in one of the few prime stores, roughly 10 out of the 60 stores in the greater Seattle area

    Cons

Absolute joke of work life balance. Was given one day off and told by my district manager " 1 and a half days off are better than no days off". As a sales associate, you are micromanaged at almost every level. You are only as good as your last month, so even the most veteran performers can be lambasted for a single bad month. Refuse to acknowledge variables outside of your control such as traffic, economy, roadwork, or anything that prevents guests from coming through the door. Teaches to never let a guest walk until you have asked for the sale multiple times, but will reprimand you if a guest complains that your too pushy. Can work anywhere within 50 miles of your house on a moments notice.

    Advice to Management

Quit the politics. Realize true talent when you have it, and understand that the perfection you desire is unattainable. Give Store leaders more flexibility. Set clear expectations, and don't let district managers change rules to best fit their agenda in the given moment. It's VERY confusing when a district manager will answer EVERY question with "consult the wiki", but then makes decisions against the policy that wiki clearly states.

I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you get on managements good side they'll put you in a higher traffic location which greatly influences earning potential.

Great training program for those new to sales.

    Cons

Long hours which lead to lack of work-life balance.

If you don't stay on managements good graces they'll find a reason to move you regardless of sales performance.

Goals are a moving target and often do not reflect historical performance or trends but the whims of management.

Lack of opportunity to advance. This is a job, not a career.

I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Employee owned (of course of you've been here at least a year)
    401k match
    Good salary
Company will take care of you if you produce. For those that say that Sleep Train favors people. Maybe those people are making the company money instead of costing them money! Crazy concept.
People that you work with are great! While hiring new team members the district sales and training managers look for them to pass the "11 hour test". basically can you see yourself hanging out with the person for 11 hours!
Some say that you have to kiss butt if you want to work here. Well if your vision doesn't line up with that of the owners of coursethey aren't crazy about it. How would you feel if you owned a company and someone refused to do what you've asked of them?

    Cons

As most sales jobs when customers have long weekends (holidays) off we're working. If there is proper staffing however you may get a couple of them off. Those that complain about working every one of these weekends have most likely never asked for one off.
Long hours. Sometimes open until 9pm
Very little 401k match (.10/$1) but that's why we have esop
Insurance is unbelievable for those that work here. My family has other insurance due to higher than desired prices for them. I'm indifferent here because if the company provided insurance to everyone's families then our company's value would go down.

    Advice to Management

Let the Store Managers have input on those that get hired and those that don't. We're the ones that will be working with them everyday.
Less sales metrics to be focused on. More focus on selling mattresses. Sometimes even when we're hitting our sales goals it gets overlooked because of some minor metric that was missed.
Other than that, great job guys. I have fun here, we sure know how to celebrate and that's what life's all about!

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn Sales skills in a very supportive environment.
    Above average pay
You have the opportunity to make decisions on your own, no micromanagement

    Cons

    Very little opportunity for advancement
    Long hours
    Work most weekends and holidays
    Retail Sales

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate hourly requirements to allow staff more time with their family, and avoid burnout.

I worked at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun group of people to work with. Can make good money if your in the right store. Good perks and free concert shows. Its a fun gig for a year or two. You can make a good living working here but you have to know the right people above.

    Cons

Better kiss up to your DSL and above, if not they will find a way to get rid of you. I was let go and still dont know understand the reason.
Work/Life balance = Work. When you think about it. 11 hour shifts and working weekends adds up to a lot of time away from home. Inevitably, you'll be working solo and it can be really depressing as all you do is watch other people make money all around you. There are some sharks that will take your sales and upper management is one big fraternity and will take sides on who they like.

    Advice to Management

For your future employees, you have to make synergy rules much more definitive. There is way too much grey area. Each store has their own rules and the wiki guidelines leaves a lot of room for money to be taken from you and can be easily be manipulated by some that will make it work for them but not everyone else. Also the health plans are horrendous.

Team environmnent, promotion from within, employee owned, contests, rewards best employees, competitive pay, great benefits.

    Cons

work life balance, favortism, long hours, feels like working for the mob

    Advice to Management

Watch your District Managers they will get you sued, they break labor laws by telling future employers more than they are required to discuss.
