      Cons

-There was a morale issue when I first started, due to many employees moving over to the TripAdvisor side, which can be seen as a con. However, management took issues extremely seriously and have implemented ways to improve morale. -Lunch options aren't always the healthiest, but I can't really complain about a free lunch

Great people, good benefits and work perks

Fun place to work with AMAZING people! Interesting problems to solve, and meaningful work to be done!

      Pros

      - The people are AMAZING to work with. I feel really lucky to get to work with such a great team every day! - Company is growing, but has maintained the small company feeling - we just moved to a great new office in the North End in January to bring us all together on one floor. - The Senior Management team is approachable - doing away with offices for managers was a really great idea - Employees are treated like adults and are trusted to get their stuff done - Benefits & perks are great - 100% health insurance for employee-only plans, 401(k) match, RSU grants, generous vacation policy, travel benefits and discounts, chair massages once a month, catered lunch twice a week.

      Cons

      - There is a bit of an 'us' and 'them' mentality between the Boston & New York teams which needs to be addressed - There is a HUGE gap between SmarterTravel and TripAdvisor, the parent company. Does anyone at TA actually understand who we are and what we do here? - Our teams are lean, which leaves some teams feeling overwhelmed and short on resources

      The People Make It Great

Oct 21, 2016 - Senior Product Manager in Boston, MA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

You will work with really smart, driven people. It's a complicated, ever changing-industry, but you get to own it. The perks are great (4 summer Fridays that you can take off and they DON'T count toward vacation + a personal travel stipend.) Work life balance is AMAZING. There's a reason people start their families here. They want to make it as easy as possible to be a mom or dad and make a big impact at work - if that requires an unconventional schedule, they are ok with that. Bottomline: Even when frustrating things happen and we are short handed, I always stop and think that I really love this job and everything we're doing.

      Cons

This company is evolving in how it make big decisions and keeps everyone in the loop. It's not great, but I still think its better than a lot of companies. Promotion raises are low. There are a lot of politics about promotions and when you finally get one, it's kind of underwhelming.

      Very Happy Here

Jul 23, 2014 - Software Engineering Lead in Boston, MA
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Co-workers and teammates are awesome. Compensation and benefits vastly exceed expectations I had only a few years ago. Engineering team is strong with many knowledgeable engineers to learn from and as a bonus they're mostly all nice people too. Opportunities to work on new products and ideas arise fairly frequently. Technology stack is fairly fresh and engineering management is pretty good about introducing new technologies and giving devs opportunities to try out new stuff.

      Cons

Engineering is stretched a little thin and senior management tends to push for pretty aggressive deadlines, which leads to some folks on the engineering team being stretched a little thin.

Fast-paced, dynamic, exciting, but not enough compensation.

Apr 1, 2012 -  in New York, NY

      Pros

      - talented, motivated, invested, and fun people - work hard, play hard attitude - company events bring coworkers together over drinks - food and snacks in the office - good resume-builder name (Gilt Groupe) - travel perks

      Cons

      - poor interdepartmental communication - promotion and firing decisions made in a rash and incomprehensible manner - volatile revenue fluctuations, so lack of security - difficulty in maintaining values in the wake of sudden company growth - huge salary gap between senior and non-senior personnel that makes employees feel unappreciated for long hours and personal investment in the company

      Pros

      * The company is growing fast - there are a lot of exciting things happening here * No shortage of challenging, interesting work - many opportunities to learn new things and develop skills * Great co-workers - smart people who look out for each other and work well as a team * Beautiful office with plenty of natural light

      Cons

      * SmarterTravel can be a demanding place to work and it isn't for everyone * We're going to run out of desks for people to sit at soon! * As the company grows and adds more products and teams, it's getting a little harder to keep track of what each group is doing and to know how well the overall business is performing

      Good company with growing pains

      Feb 26, 2010 -  in Boston, MA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

*Fun environment - great people, biweekly snack, travel is a fun vertical! *Still a young company - there's a lot of flexibility to define your role within your dept. and the company. *Good benefits, stable and successful company even in this tough economy.

      Cons

*Absolutely no mentoring or career development. There's little chance for internal promotion - managers are brought in from the parent company and are not always a good fit. Strong individual contributors end up leaving the company in order to move up. *Bad work/life balance. Workloads are heavy and the hiring process is slow, meaning multiple departments are understaffed. Flex schedules are only available to recent parents. *Low morale, some depts are worn down and paranoid about being laid off *Company culture has changed as the parent company has become more involved (and not for the better)
