I worked at Smith Brothers Agency full-time

    Pros

Beer, dogs, and some good people

    Cons

Everything else Sadly this place has zero vision for the future. When times are good, they staff up super fast, and when times get rough they cut even faster. A regular hire/layoff cycle is common in any agency, but this place is like nothing you've ever seen. That trend is part of a bigger, underlying issue - total lack of vision. The place was built on good creative that then added smart strategy, but today there...

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people on staff who have been successful for you (or for others) rather than thinking you know best and overlooking what has actually earned you business.

    Pros

Smart thinkers and eager doers. Majority of employees will work hard, often up until the last minute to make sure the work gets done well. You’ll find dedication even when asked for quick turnarounds that require late nights or weekends. Content studio and video team make it easy to produce high quality creative in-house. Can be high paying if you’re aggressive when you start. Raises are not common. Year-end bonuses...

    Cons

There is resistance toward new ways of doing things, new coworkers and new clients. Often feels like us vs. them and a general sense of mistrust internally. Poor scoping of work. This leads to a lot of confusion, frustration, scope changes and inappropriately staffed client teams. People have been taken off or left off projects altogether when not physically present in the office. Poor communication or inclusion...

    Advice to Management

Be mindful of the negative atmosphere when work and productivity is subpar. Listen to your employees when they are having issues trusting or depending on other team members. Regulate use of Slack. It's not being always being used for productive purposes and is fueling a toxic work environment. Determine and share long-term company goals and direction with employees. Be better with career growth and guidance. ...

I worked at Smith Brothers Agency full-time

    Pros

Fun workspace (open office) Slide Beer Dogs Food

    Cons

Pretty much everything else. No guidance. Clients were incredibly mismanaged by upper management and often times prioritized their own careers instead of the overall agency. Politics run rampant and management favorites, even if they weren't the best employee, would skirt by any layoffs, repercussions or doing any work. Speaking of layoffs, there's a ton. The agency fluctuates in size by a dramatic amount. There is no...

    Advice to Management

You need to let people you hire do their jobs. Let creatives be creatives. Stop changing ideas and concepts at the final stages because you couldn't be bothered to review content. Or come to meetings. Or respond to emails. Or speak to your employees.

I worked at Smith Brothers Agency full-time

    Pros

I learned a ton and grew a lot during my time here. It's a great place to learn the ropes of the ad agency world because they do a little bit of everything, and even have an in-house video content team. Benefits are really great.

    Cons

The management expects a lot of its employees, which isn't always a bad thing, but can become stressful when the expectation is that you work 10-hour days without getting paid all that well. The culture can be kind of political at times - for the most part everyone is kind and welcoming, but it quickly becomes a breeding ground for drama when the people in charge aren't super transparent about what's going on with...

I worked at Smith Brothers Agency full-time

    Pros

Cool work space, dog-friendly, good location, good benefits, free beer and roof top parties

    Cons

The agency is more focused on getting clients in the door than actually listening and scoping the work accurately. This resulted in spending most days doing re-work and/or working on things that were not in scope. You are expected to stay late every day even if you have nothing to do. You are viewed as a slacker if you leave at 5pm, even if you come in early or work at home until 10pm every night. Many people that...

    Advice to Management

Scope the work properly and listen to the team who will spend the time working with the clients daily. Stop setting PMs and client service people up for failure. Hire good managers that can guide and develop people before you lose all the good ones. Transparent communication with your employees will go a long way.

    Pros

Earnest, hard-working people who do really care about what they do and always improving the quality of their creative work. SBA has big name clients, you'll work on advertising for products you see every time you go to the grocery store. Lots people who have been there for 10+ years, so seems like a viable place to have a career. Great work, depending on your discipline. I'd say their niche is social media advertising,...

    Cons

Culture was very siloed by department, when I was there. People seemed a little defensive/annoyed when fielding critique from someone in another department, especially if that department wasn't deemed 'creative' ;-). Path for promotion, performance review, salary increase wasn't clear, and everyone had different answers when asked. Lots of bureaucracy and over-focus on 'process'. Super tight deadlines, which in reality,...

    Advice to Management

More transparency with employees regarding: 1) What's really going on behind the scenes with projects. 2) What their realistic career path and salary increases can be, and on what timelines. 3) Lots of little projects that seem pointless, but really aren't. Help employees understand why they matter, see the big picture.

    Pros

Roof deck, beer always on tap, ping pong table and great people work there. You can also bring your dog, and every conference room had a doggie door.

    Cons

Very very tight schedules, and well... it's an Ad agency so instead of focusing on making a great product, they want to make something that sells. Just wasn't my favorite thing to focus on. While I was there they must've laid off 12 people because they suddenly lost a client.

    Advice to Management

Stop worring about selling a product and start focusing on what matters the most, the product. Also don't expect people to be constantly available via email, phone.

    Pros

It's an awesome culture - very open and transparent leadership with business goals, great space, good people. Rather savvy.

    Cons

Needs to diversify a bit with new business to keep growing. Also, try to get more quality junior talent! And listen to them, especially if millennials are your target...

    Advice to Management

Stay transparent, work on making growth/development planning and review processes more formal again.
