    Pros

They are great with their employees. Have a very solid management team and are consistent with their employees. There is room for advancement.

    Cons

I really can't say too many bad things about this company, they were really great with me.

  2. "Pretty good company"

    Pros

Coworkers are great and they're always happy to help each other. The office has more of a "family" feel and we like to do fun activities to keep the morale up. Partners are very approachable if you have an issue, or even if you just want to have a friendly conversation. There's always a lot of work to be done so you're definitely challenged to get things done.

    Cons

Pay is low, especially for the area. Although I think everyone is great, sometimes the attorneys get a little cliquish. Smaller work environment causes work to be overloaded on one person. Work can be repetitive and boring but that could just be the industry.

    Advice to Management

Keep the lines of communication open.

I worked at Smith Freed & Eberhard (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people. Fun environment. Decent benefits. Centrally located building in downtown Portland.

    Cons

Too much emphasis on the billable hour, while write downs on paralegal time are high. No administrative support for the paralegals. Overtime rarely approved, which encourages paralegals to work 'off the clock' in order to fulfill billable requirement and complete administrative tasks as needed. Pay is equal to entry level paralegal positions, regardless of experience or training. Bonus structure also encourages working off the clock.

    Advice to Management

Seriously consider revamping your overtime policy to conform with BOLI requirements or switch the paralegals over to a higher salaried structured pay format.

I worked at Smith Freed & Eberhard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Steady work, nice offices in downtown Portland, paid health insurance for full-time employees, medium-sized law firm that is well established.

    Cons

Conveyor belt-type practices, more emphasis put on billing than doing a good job for the client. Attorneys are encouraged to not make friends with the staff.

    Advice to Management

Excellence isn't all about money. If the firm cared about its clients they wouldn't have so many write-offs on their bills, and they wouldn't be audited as often. If the firm cared about its employees, their wouldn't be a high turn-over.

  5. "Good people, interesting work and a laid back culture"

    Pros

The people at the firm are smart, down to earth laid back people even for a litigation law firm. People get together often and the firm has a few programs in place to elevate culture and increase the amount of work life balance.

    Cons

Its a litigation law firm so there are billable hours and sometimes long days. The partners are really good people for the most part but need to be more consistent as a group.

    Advice to Management

Continue to train and develop your partners, attorneys and staff. Become more transparent.

    Pros

Location, nice offices, trimet outside door

    Cons

No support from management or opportunities for growth. All about billable hours. If employee has issue or concern, there is no one to go to. Despite now having an employment law section, they do not practice what they preach. High turnover.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff. They have a lot of knowledge to share and many concerns. They are overworked and no recourse for improvement.

    Pros

Colleagues are genuine and enjoyable to work with. Your fellow associates have a collaborative spirit. The office space is comfortable and you have the tools you need to do the job well. You're often given responsibility early for case management.

    Cons

This is a billable hour mill - and there's no avoiding it. Unfortunately, at times this seems to be emphasized to the exclusion of all else (i.e. community involvement, business development, life/work balance, etc.). This would be fine - if the pay were commensurate - however, while you're doing the amount of work expected at any large firm in Portland, you're being paid 35-45% less. This is, admittedly, partly due to the nature of the firm's insurance defense business model. Also, the firm's reputation as a "churn and burn" outfit seems to carry in the legal community due to the large number of former employees now working elsewhere in the marketplace. Overall, there seems to be a strong employee morale problem that has led to turnover in approximately 1/3 of the firm's attorneys during the past 18 months.

    Advice to Management

Communication - real and substantive - with associates and other employees must be improved. Concerns, both reasonable and perceived, have to be better addressed and brought to light.

    Pros

The firm is always improving. People work hard and have fun there. The people are great! Lots of loyal employees which says a lot. If you invest in SFE they will invest in you!

    Cons

All companies have struggles and changes. SFE is and will continue to be a good place to be. The firm has remained strong despite the country's economic struggles.

    Advice to Management

Keeping everyone happy is difficult. They do a good job and are always trying to do a better job at listening to employees on all levels. You can't plesae all the people all the time but you can please most of the people most of the time.

I have been working at Smith Freed & Eberhard (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Room to grow, challenging work, great people, good working relationships and excellent training programs.

    Cons

All companies have difficulties, especially during tough economic times.

    Advice to Management

Need to keep up the communication with employees. This has been an issue in the past, but there has been a lot of improvement in the recent months. Employees like to hear from management and where the company is headed.
