I worked at Smith International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Family feeling, a lot of freedom to do and very little bureaucracy. The environment is not challenging and the stress level is kept pretty low, some people spent decades in this company without any issue and usually seniority gives you decent promotions especially if you go in the management path. Time off is mostly on a honor system.

    Cons

If you aren't in the right loop or under the wrong manager, is going to be tough. Managers don't move around, especially the bad ones and the company doesn't lay them off easily. Quite some talented people left for that reason and is not good for the company.

    Advice to Management

    Move managers around more often,

    Pros

While working there the benefits were great, co-workers were great, great pay, and learn a lot if you like trial and error method.

    Cons

Too corporate. Lots of stress and worry when the market is down. You become a number instead of a name, and work very long hours only to get a few hours of sleep to do it all again the next day.

    Advice to Management

Learn who the names of the people who work for you. Just because you hold a different title, doesn't mean that everyone else is beneath you. Remember that the work that those people do for you are the reason a product is sold and creates profit. Be a mentor to the newcomers.
