I worked at Smith International full-time

    Pros

The company was awesome, really treated the employees top notch. Benefits were some of the best in O&G. The retirement was awesome. Work environment was good and everyone worked together well.

    Cons

There were some organizational issues with management. Not so much managements fault but when you hire upper level positions based on a degree and they have no experience in the field it makes it tough for them and the employees to work with. summer training doesn't make up for years experience dealing with customers and technical issues. The smarter Engineers that should of been in these positions stayed in the field.

    Advice to Management

Don't take years of service for granted. someone who has spent years with the company has the companies best interest at hand.

I have been working at Smith International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The sent me to many training classes and I felt that I was part of the "team" and that I was being mentored for a management position.

    Cons

Too many changes with upper management. Smith International was purchased by Schlumberger during my time with the company.

    Advice to Management

Take time to listen to your direct reports on their goals and what direction they would like to take their career.

    Pros

Respect and return business from customers because of flexibility allowed by company and customer service focus.
All companies state people to be their most valuable assets, only Smith appears to actually recognize this.

    Cons

Poor technical support for NAM based international operators. Smith need to place knowledgable people in the product lines offerings to support these customers.

    Advice to Management

Place technical people to support customers.
Continue to work on product development to keep our competitors from catching up or surpassing.
    All in all, great job.

    Pros

career opportunities, financial stability, global market opportunities, leader in our market

    Cons

The company has gotten so big that sometimes we lack pro-active communication and silos in the organization that take away from the strategy One Smith

    Advice to Management

Stay in tune with the field, employees and customers on what is expected for superior customer service to be a first class service company

    Pros

Great package especially overseas on a SIBCO contract; quality management team; ample opportunities for career growth both vetrticaly and horizontaly; small company feel

    Cons

Unfortunately the company got bought by Schlumberger after the great financial crisis. They had taken on some debt to buy WHES and as a result of the GFC they got themselves in a situation whereby they couldn't really refuse the offer.

    Advice to Management

I don't really have too much to say here as the management has nearly all left the company since it was taken over by Schlumberger.
