    Pros

Some really great people work at SMSI. Unfortunately, none of them are in upper management and the great ones rarely get recognized for doing excellent work.

    Cons

Best people have already left or are on their way out. Out of touch CEO avoids direct confrontation so people with bad attitudes, poor product knowledge and zero people skills end up with VP & C-level titles. Upper management doesn't understand what their product offerings are, what their plan is or what their goals should be so they make it up as they go along. As such, don't expect any guidance, training or support. HR is completely inept and unable to problem solve, only tries to make sure the company doesn't get sued.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to someone who knows what they're doing.

    Pros

At Smith Micro there are a vast amount of projects at any given time. No matter what position or project you are assigned to, you will not be bored.

    Cons

Some projects get more emphasis than the others, even if the employees think that they are less important.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Smith Micro capture that niche market, and should continue to innovate in that regard.

I have been working at Smith Micro full-time

    Pros

Good people; fair amount of autonomy (YMMV); good pay (YMMV); executive and ownership seem to genuinely care about their people; they have a very positive view on their future.

    Cons

They seem to only be looking as far as meeting the next quarter's numbers instead of looking well beyond that (tunnel vision vs. forward-thinking, which ironically, is their marketing tagline). There no obvious career planning guidance (although there is a new head of HR; so maybe that will change). They tend to think and behave in a very "silo-ed" way. One of their largest sources of revenues comes from a single customer.

    Advice to Management

Become a true product company; live up to the marketing tagline; help employees be able to forge their career paths; take advantage of all of the resources that you have (the people) and their skills, especially if they can help you in different projects/products/areas.

    Pros

Flexible work schedule - You can choose your hours as long as you put in your full 80 per week.
Some of the customers you'll work with are pretty cool.

    Cons

The execute staff is "C Grade" and it shows.
The work culture is horrible. There is a 3 tier class system. The CEO, the CEO's direct reports and everyone else.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be a complete overhaul, from the CEO down. However, unless the company gets bought out or goes bust, this will never happen.

    Pros

Smith Micro Software used to be a great place to work! Excellent people, friendly environment for the most part and an encouraging work atmosphere prior to my departure.

    Cons

Always feel like someone is looking over your shoulder no matter what you do. Management will talk behind your back and will not support you in meetings; leaving you on an island.

    Advice to Management

Need more activities to encourage your employees that it can be a fun place to work! Set standards where people look out for one another. Learn to evolve with the ever changing flow of technology.

    Pros

If you work in Santa Cruz, the culture is pretty good, flexible hours, great people. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Aliso Viejo runs on fear and generally the company culture is terrible. Management does not understand nor do they value employees. There are no incentives to be creative and everything focuses on revenue and cutting expenses making resources slim, and expectations unrealistic.

    Advice to Management

Leave. Let someone not stuck in a mid 80's sales organization mindset take over and focus on customer needs and actually solving real problems. Value your employees, all of of them. Hire younger management with varied experience in agile startups. You're operating like a B-52 instead of an F-16.

"The Santa Cruz P&G team of SMSI; cool products, cool people"

I worked at Smith Micro full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The Santa Cruz Productivity and Graphics division of SMSI is a very unique team, working on developing and publishing software tools used by creative content developers. They produce the Poser brand (used to create Red vs. Blue, RWBY) and Anime Studio (used in a 2015 Academy Award nominated animated feature length film) brand, as well as publishing Manga Studio/Clip Studio. They also developed Sock Puppets, with over a million downloads on the app store. There are several other new products recently released, most notably Motion Artist for HTML 5 interactive content development.

In Santa Cruz, there's a team of dedicated folks, some who have been working on the brands upwards of 20+ years. These guys, this team gets it. They know the 2D/3D graphics and animation space. They know the app space. They know where the future is heading. And they're on track with their goals and delivery schedules.

The products are tangible. If you care about graphics products, tools for artists, animators, content creators, working here is like getting to play. The time demands are rational, they get that you have a life and respect those boundaries. The benefits are solid. If you want to be that person at the cocktail party who can answer the question "what do you do?" with the coolest response, do it.

My review numbers are for the P&G group at SMSI, in Santa Cruz.

    Cons

Santa Cruz is a little sleepier than the valley, but it's emerging as a tech center.
