I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great firm, it is a multinational corporation, it is 160 years old firm, it's one of the top 10 firms in America, have great people, lot of great work, has many departments for wide range of work, one of the best internship programs, 15 extra holidays due to the (some) Friday off rules-- great for work-life balance

    Cons

Big firm so slightly slow during hiring, except internship, bureaucratic due to the size of the firm

    Advice to Management

Check on people at higher posts should be made from time to time based on other junior employees reviews- some of them do not deserve to be there.

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time

    Pros

Employees are passionate about what they do, both in the workplace and out. Mentorship is encouraged and commonplace. Expectations are clear, and there are plenty of opportunities to "choose your path." Continuing education is encouraged, and the office provides many of the resources to assist with job training, software training and innovations within all related fields. All employees are treated with respect,...

    Cons

Some politics and corporate environment, if that's not your thing. If it is, then you'll do well.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time

    Pros

Great Location Friendly staff and peers. Collaborative work environment. If you are motivated and talented you will get opportunities. Good work life balance every other Friday off ! this is AWESOME.

    Cons

Difficult to get promotions, Lack of clarity around the process of getting promoted. Hard work is up to each individual, working hard will not always result in gratifying results.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to young and loyal talent. A lot of talented people loose interest and leave because they are not given opportunities.

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Every other Friday off in the summer!

    Cons

Slow career advancement. Promotions/raises only given on annual cycle instead of at major career milestones (such as getting ones first architecture license).

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The few pros would be the "few pros" who actually have kept on there. There are VERY few of them. The best of them are sullen, the worst? Well, let your imagination fly.

    Cons

Would take a website unto itself... but wait, that would be the SmithGroupJJR website. Poor pay and understaffing, excuse me, non-existent staffing and actually considering movie "coupons" as part of a benefit package... COUPONS!!!. Shady business between the partners, an associate level that either was born there or slept there, and staff that would make "Office Space" look extremely functional.

    Advice to Management

Quite. Go home and turn on the oven.

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people, decent design, great benefits. Every other Friday off. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy. A lot of bread and butter projects that are not properly designed.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

SmithGroup has excellent benefits and bonuses for all employees. There are endless opportunities to advance and learn from very knowledgeable colleagues. The Financial District office location is great and has an open studio floor plan which invites cross-communication.

    Cons

SmithGroup is a very large firm. It is highly competitive and lacks a sense of job security. The firm does not make internal training, IDP or ARE a priority, but expects each employee to acquire knowledge and licensure. The design aesthetics are good, but not as great as they could be with the talent there.

    Advice to Management

I am not a disgruntled employee, I actually enjoyed my time at SmithGroup and would not turn down an opportunity to work there again in the future. But there are opportunities there and knowledge that I can pass on. First and foremost, internal open design critiques (where people critique, not just pat each other on the back) and training is imperative and will determine the future of the company. It is in the best interest...
