    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Overall I've had a great experience at SmithGroupJJR- great integration across offices, exciting projects and forward thinking in sustainability, modeling, and project delivery. The people are outstanding- a wide breadth of young people who make a fun atmosphere. Many opportunities to get involved outside of the office in volunteer projects or social sports teams. 8.5-hour work days = additional 15 days off per year....

    Cons

Upward movement is hard. A lot can depend on your specific PM/principle to advocate for you. I've ended up pigeon-holed in projects that I can't get away from. There has been high turnover in some areas due to poor management, lack of projects, or burn out because supervisors will not listen to their employees' concerns and implement changes to keep them happy. There has been a huge overhaul of management in the past...

I worked at SmithGroup full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A lot of very bright, talented and nice people work here. Great work/life balance with extra fridays off. Beautiful SF office space.

    Cons

Big firm, stodgy, very political. Very inconsistent quality control. Tends to have an "assembly line" mentality, which may appear to be efficient but definitely not a good place to learn or advance a career. About twenty people have been laid off this past year. Management has not officially acknowledged any of these layoffs. Everything is heard through the grapevine. No "thank you we wish him/her well." Communication,...

    Advice to Management

There is a big disconnect between management and staff, and communication in general is dysfunctional. If you're in management and you find this surprising, then I've proven my point. The first step for management is to find out what reality is. In searching for reality, here's a tip - don't ask another person from management.

I have been working at SmithGroup

    Pros

Working at SG, you will have the benefit of working on quality projects. The office has an excellent reputation and wins a lot of work, making it a more stable work environment than many other offices. They are also reasonable when it comes to PTO and extreme hours, which is uncommon in this industry (nights and weekend work is only occasionally required). They also work a 42.5 hour week and provide about 12 Fridays...

    Cons

Path to leadership and career advancement can be ambiguous and frustrating. The level of design is typically very good, but not exceptional. Compensation is below average.
