I have been working at SmithGroup full-time

    Pros

Employees are passionate about what they do, both in the workplace and out. Mentorship is encouraged and commonplace. Expectations are clear, and there are plenty of opportunities to "choose your path." Continuing education is encouraged, and the office provides many of the resources to assist with job training, software training and innovations within all related fields. All employees are treated with respect,...

    Cons

Some politics and corporate environment, if that's not your thing. If it is, then you'll do well.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Mostly good projects. A lot of very talented staff. Multi-discipline office makes your job a little easier. A lot of work right now, you stay busy. 15 Fridays off per year is awesome. Benefits are adequate compared to the standard.

    Cons

Very heavy on corporate buzzwords: "Thought leadership" and that kind of nonsense. Few pieces of deadweight that have been around forever. Pay is good in the door, but slow increasing after.

    Advice to Management

Cut some of the dead weight. Stay competitive with pay in the market not only at first, but continuing thereafter. That will help with retention and avoid the boomerang hires. At very least, recognize where the bulk of your work gets done and where the profits come from.

    Cons

Very corporate, lots of politics, don't bother if you don't like that kind of thing.

    I worked at SmithGroup full-time

    Pros

People are friendly, try to have fun and work-life balance.

    Cons

Some new management had no management experience, and didn't make expectations clear. Hard to meet unclear expectations.

    Advice to Management

Make sure people.promoted to management have a mentor, and some management training. Set some guidelines on how managers convey expectations.

    I worked at SmithGroup

    Pros

-- The Ann Arbor office is full of great people. It's a big firm, but the office isn't very large: ~40 engineers, planners, landscape architects, and marketing. Super nice people. --Projects varied sufficiently to be interesting. Though I didn't work on a variety of actual projects, the tasks that I was assigned varied widely: working on preliminary design with the civils, concept work with the planners and LA's, post-construction...

    Pros

There is a good office environment that makes it a pleasant place to work. We also do pretty cool projects most of the time!

    Cons

Industry wide, architecture salaries are not the best. SGJJR is not the exception.

I have been working at SmithGroup

    Pros

We work 8.5 hour days, we have several Fridays off which helps with downtime, relaxation and all the benefits with being full time.. The atmosphere is great, very little stress. If you need to come in late and work late, you can do so. Dress code is relaxing.

    Cons

Colleagues are lazy and unqualified for their positions. Upper management does not notice when they are unproductive and essentially useless. One individual doesn't even work normal work hours and shops all day. The employees who come in early and work their tails off get poor raises, while others who dont even work full days/weeks get promotions and recognition.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the employees who make your job easy and remove the ones who are shopping on amazon/target; it sends a bad message to your staff. Its not our fault they work for a slow, poorly utilized office. Some of us bust are butts but get no praise.
