Current Employee - Architect III in Detroit, MI

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 8 years

      Pros

      Challenging projects and talented colleagues

      Cons

People tend to do only what they were hired with experience doing, not much opportunity to advance your career into new areas.

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

Great people who are in the same prison... most do tend to stick together... others take advantage. You might make a friend... hopefully you'll meet someone who will get you a better job.

      Cons

Everything. Even the "bagel Monday" is stale... The office design is a junk shop of wannabe progressive, the administrative staff is hired on a "bored, poor and just need a job" basis. If there is any talent there it sinks to the level of working at the DMV. And don't even think about Senior Management. This is a place in which Senior Management dislikes everyone and tells them on a daily basis. This is not...

      Advice to Management

Suicide? Familycide? Please remove yourselves from the business, architecture and human community.

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

SmithGroupJJR has a good work/life balance for an architecture firm, providing a dozen Fridays off each year in addition to the regular holidays and vacation time. There aren't top brass with big egos like at some other firms. And, is company culture isn't too stuffy compared to other large firms.

      Cons

Although the corporate hierarchy is pretty flat and SGJJR provides good on-the-job training career advancement opportunities are limited just like at other large firms.

      Advice to Management

Approachable and friendly. All the upper management I've interacted with are happy to engage the younger staff.

I have been working at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Good work/life balance. Every other Friday off in the summer!

      Cons

Slow career advancement. Promotions/raises only given on annual cycle instead of at major career milestones (such as getting ones first architecture license).

I worked at SmithGroup full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

I liked almost everyone I worked with. The projects I worked on were very cool. The office locations are all in great urban spaces... Ann Arbor MI, Madison WI, DC, and Chicago

      Cons

The land development industry was hit hard during the recession. Work was scarce, margins were razor thin and morale was down. It was enough to drive me away from the business. This is not the industry to pursue if you are looking for career advancement, good compensation, and a stable work environment.

      Advice to Management

Implement a better employee training program for young new-hires with a structured Leadership/Professional development track for high potential individuals.

I worked at SmithGroup full-time for more than a year

      Pros

great people, interesting projects, decent PTO + Friday offs, great industry reputation, casual working environment, great company events, healthcare focused company.

      Cons

Strong politics like all the large firms. No career advancement plan, very little opportunities. Poor marketing makes the firm hard to get work resulting the studios very slow at most times. Poor project management and fee tracking which caused most project to loose profit. Repeatitive tasks, relatively poor in areas other than healthcare.

I have been working at SmithGroup

      Pros

Working at SG, you will have the benefit of working on quality projects. The office has an excellent reputation and wins a lot of work, making it a more stable work environment than many other offices. They are also reasonable when it comes to PTO and extreme hours, which is uncommon in this industry (nights and weekend work is only occasionally required). They also work a 42.5 hour week and provide about 12 Fridays...

      Cons

Path to leadership and career advancement can be ambiguous and frustrating. The level of design is typically very good, but not exceptional. Compensation is below average.
