I worked at Smithfield Foods full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This was a great introduction into the industrial safety world. Education assistance was available.

    Cons

I worked at Smithfield for over two years. In that time span, I've had to deal with almost every aspect of what a safety professional covers. I came into the position from a completely different industry and was astonished by the poor safety culture and lack of interest from upper management. Health and Safety was an afterthought, only coming into light following the injuries, accidents and other issues that brought in the OSHA and EPA visits. The company as a whole has a safety system, although it is primarily run by the few safety professionals located at each location and given little support or attention. There is little to no buy in from any other management. There is no attempt to seek out professionals who will work to change the culture and there is no ambition to improve the level of safety at the location I worked at. There is a “good-ole boy” mentality that few recognize as a fault and no one is willing to change. The is no work/life balance, the plant will operate on the weekend following the holiday to make up for lost production.

    Advice to Management

Work to improve employee's working conditions, culture and mentality. Hire professionals who act like professionals. Increase pay levels to the industry's standard.

I have been working at Smithfield Foods full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Well, it is a paycheck. Regular employees are ok to work with most of the time. I seriously can not think of any other reason to work here.

    Cons

Worst management I have ever had in my entire career. They put their friends in higher paying positions even when they don't have the skills needed. They are arrogant, and cannot be wrong, even when you prove it. This applies to several, if not all, of upper management. They preach teamwork, but in actuality you will become the work horse- there is no team. I have seen hard working people regularly have their jobs threatened, including myself, for no reason other than "the boss is pouting" to put it nicely. It is a terrible, stressful, negative place to work. To top it all off, its in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but go to Walmart. Upper managent will ask you to move here, use you and when they are done they will throw you away, especially if you question them or have a better idea than the boss. Somehow that makes you a threat instead of a productive employee.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees, value them, and reward them more. No one even gets a "thank you". Secondly, stop the buddy system. Put qualified workers in place.

I have been working at Smithfield Foods full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tuition reimbursement, gym membership, 401k 5yr vested, insurance is great, company helps many people with disabilities/illnesses to work, slowly improves faculty for everyone

    Cons

Managment not great-communication to employees, reviews not done properly, employees are not usually promoted the company usually looks to the market first

    Advice to Management

Need more training for management to motivate employees such as proper PMP reviews and other basic scenario. Very outdated managment types, open a current college text in managment should be a quick update on how managment should have evolved by now.
