I worked at Smithfield Foods full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This was a great introduction into the industrial safety world. Education assistance was available.

    Cons

I worked at Smithfield for over two years. In that time span, I've had to deal with almost every aspect of what a safety professional covers. I came into the position from a completely different industry and was astonished by the poor safety culture and lack of interest from upper management. Health and Safety was an afterthought, only coming into light following the injuries, accidents and other issues that brought in the OSHA and EPA visits. The company as a whole has a safety system, although it is primarily run by the few safety professionals located at each location and given little support or attention. There is little to no buy in from any other management. There is no attempt to seek out professionals who will work to change the culture and there is no ambition to improve the level of safety at the location I worked at. There is a “good-ole boy” mentality that few recognize as a fault and no one is willing to change. The is no work/life balance, the plant will operate on the weekend following the holiday to make up for lost production.

    Advice to Management

Work to improve employee's working conditions, culture and mentality. Hire professionals who act like professionals. Increase pay levels to the industry's standard.
