I worked at Sobeys part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The first Sobey's I worked for was a franchise and owned by a husband and wife. They were amazing. Payed well, the staff acted as a team, the environment was good and I was given 40 hours a week plus benefits. I loved working there.

    Cons

The second Sobey's i worked for was a corporate store and it was terrible. I couldn't get full time work, or at least full time status to get a pay raise. They would schedule me full time but kept me labelled as a part-time worker. I was suppose to receive benefits but my package in the mail showed up after the enrollment date and I had to wait another year to enroll to receive benefits. My manager was a monster. Yelled at me in front of customers and staff, lied and manipulated to make herself look good. She personally made every one of my coworkers break down in tears at one point or another. Probably one of the worst experiences I've had.

    Advice to Management

Go to school to learn about new management practices. Treat people with respect and dignity. Manipulation is not management, nor is yelling, threats, or avoidance.

I have been working at Sobeys part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My department manager is laid back. Never had issues with him. He is probably the one person that has been a factor in me working there as long as I have. Store manager is cool. Used to be able to select an item from the bakery if it was your birthday.

    Cons

    A raise would be nice
    No employee discounts at Sobeys

I have been working at Sobeys full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment. Co-workers are very helpful and genuinely want you to succeed. Fairly decent compensation and work life balance. There are flex hours in Toronto, and most managers are fairly accommodating when you need to leave for an appointment. Huge company, so a lot of opportunity to grow professionally.

    Cons

Lack of transparency. Hierarchical structure, however company is going through a reorg, which may remove some of the levels and hierarchy. Sometimes hard to get things done because so many people have to approve even the smallest idea. Again, this might change once the re-org has been completed.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees more. Be more accountable.
