I have been working at Sobeys part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My department manager is laid back. Never had issues with him. He is probably the one person that has been a factor in me working there as long as I have. Store manager is cool. Used to be able to select an item from the bakery if it was your birthday.

    Cons

    A raise would be nice
    No employee discounts at Sobeys

I worked at Sobeys full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

None. It's a job that gives you a meager paycheck.

    Cons

Toxic environment, micromanagement, they blame everyone but themselves for all of the screwups in the takeover of Safeway. They lost huge accounts due to over pricing, poor service and a dictatorship style of running their business when it comes to the franchisees. They want all of the money to stay at the wholesale level and screw the stores. They mis-ship a product, too bad, you keep it, no credit for you! You are on call 24/7 even when you are on holidays your cell phone must stay on.

    Advice to Management

Take off your blinders and realize that there are people out there that actually know how to run a wholesale. Take more advice from your employees, they are the boots on the ground and trust me, you don't know it all. Kind of shows after admitting to your customers that you screwed up but that came 3 years after you screwed up Safeway which was 10 times the company you are.

I have been working at Sobeys part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Semi-flexible shifts but that's it

    Cons

Have co workers constantly call in sick, never being told how well of a job your doing, no pay raise, people quitting constantly because of the poor management team

    Advice to Management

For starters, treat your employees like actual people and not slaves. Secondly, sit down and talk with them every 6 months to review there work and how they're feeling. Thirdly, pay them based on there work quality, responsibleness, and job experience rather then by time period. And finally, make the job worth while and as fun as possible, and not seem as daunting.

    Cons

    Unreasonable manager
Horrible communication from upper level management - at times employees would be yelled at

    Lots of gossip
    Rushed breaks

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with better respect, and learn to communicate more effectively without using threats and raising your voices.

    Pros

The store and equipment is very clean and there isn't too much expected from employees.

I have been working at Sobeys full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment. Co-workers are very helpful and genuinely want you to succeed. Fairly decent compensation and work life balance. There are flex hours in Toronto, and most managers are fairly accommodating when you need to leave for an appointment. Huge company, so a lot of opportunity to grow professionally.

    Cons

Lack of transparency. Hierarchical structure, however company is going through a reorg, which may remove some of the levels and hierarchy. Sometimes hard to get things done because so many people have to approve even the smallest idea. Again, this might change once the re-org has been completed.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees more. Be more accountable.

    Pros

Sobeys was a good place to work, benefits, good pay rate, and very close to Tim Hortons.

    Cons

No real room for advancement as a worker on the floor.

    I worked at Sobeys part-time

    Pros

Nice employees, good manager, easy to learn how to work as a cashier here even if you have no experience

    Cons

the only issue I had was that I felt that I had no room to grow. I felt as if i was going to be a cashier for as long as I would work there. I felt that i should be able to possibly grow and become a supervisor in that company.
