I have been working at Sobeys full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, benefits, honourable family heritage, great potential if the company has the courage to make painful adjustments.
Plenty of industry know how is there but not utilized.

    Cons

Ridiculously complex structure, massive bureaucracy that is disconnected to what pays the bills-selling groceries.
Inbred leadership- all Ontario centric ex Loblaw employees that have no understanding of the vast majority of their business, which lies outside of Ontario.

    Advice to Management

Move our National office to Halifax (not Stellarton) and get back to our roots.
Regional offices in Stellarton, Mississauga, Calgary and Montreal.
Promote people that are passsionate about the store and the Sobeys way.

    Pros

Job itself was usually not too bad. Quality of store depends very highly on quality of manager. I've had both, and the amount of work delegated to clerks and keyholders depends on the manager's ability to... manage.

    Cons

Head office staff love to micro-manage, especially if your manager is doing a poor job. Unfortunately the front-line workers feel the brunt of this.

    Advice to Management

Do your jobs properly and your staff will be a lot more satisfied. Don't just sit in the office and actually go out and do some work alongside them.

I have been working at Sobeys full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Customer service driven.
Excellent opportunity to gain experience working in sales and team work.
Can move in the industry easily.

    Cons

Stressful at times within busy store locations.

    Advice to Management

Training for newer employees should be unambiguous and more precise.

I worked at Sobeys full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - The front-end manager respected all employees
    - $0.50 above minimum wage
    - Received proper training
    - Paid breaks

    Cons

    - We were not permitted water at our stations. I became dehydrated every shift and struggled to restore hydration during breaks.
    - We were not permitted regular washroom breaks. I was lucky to get one washroom break a shift in addition to any I took during my 15 minute break. Due to the dehydration issue previously addressed, I would drink about a litre of water while on break and then need to relieve myself about an hour later. I was not permitted a washroom break even at points of peak physical discomfort and ended up with a UTI.

    Advice to Management

It's difficult for me to expect any revolutionary changes, but there must be some solution to the problems I have listed. These are human rights issue and caused me a fair amount of personal discomfort.
