I worked at Socalgas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay/ benefits. Great, Fun co-workers and Customers. Donuts. Energy Tech Residential ( field tech) position enjoyable...your own boss in field. Position (in field with Customers) requires using all your senses and engaging your mind--as a sleuth-- to drill down in solving the Customer's actual cause of request. Consistent Management practice of bringing left over food-goodies (after their meeting) to the employee meeting room--unexpected and unnecessary... but very classy.

    Cons

Best to leave brain on stand-by at the morning meeting. Management style is authoritarian, top-down, maintain the status quo at all costs, yes-man, falling dominos-- school of Management. Management despises change and improvement. Speaking up on need for continuous improvement, improving processes and calling attention to waste in operations--will target you for retaliation. Disingenuous Code of Conduct and ethics hotline-- is for show only--- Machiavellian. Lack of employee growth and development by culture where highest virtue is....'staying under the radar'. Company lags its peers in safety because safety is politicized. Promotions not based on merit/ best and brightest are not promoted-- fast-track to promotion is based on abilities as a loyal yes-man who will back their boss....unconditionally. Stress problem at Company caused by Management bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Arrogance and maintaining the status quo doesn't work in 2018. It's all about the Customer-- DeNile is not just a river in Egypt fellas! Company sorely needs....Deming ( " Continuous improvement....product and service" ), Toyota production system (kaizen) & Lean Six Sigma.

I have been working at Socalgas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Low stress work environment
    - Great benefits
    - Flexible schedule (depending on group)
    - Secure career

    Cons

    - Tenure is the only way to get recognized; performance rarely considered
    - Lots of office politics, very difficult to advance in career (unless you have tenure)
    - Anti-Change ("but we have always done it this way...")

    Advice to Management

Reward performance... and pay less attention to how long an employee has been there.

It's a great company with lots of history. The people stay a long time and are very friendly

    Cons

Very hierarchical. Hard to move up

I worked at Socalgas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay; job security mainly due to union; training

    Cons

High stress, little support, demanding, environment with high level of hostility - from customers as well as the company's upper management; direct supervisor is really just your file keeper & liason - in reality, company/employee relations are very poor. Witnessed one too many colleagues being taken out of the call center on stretchers. Yes, really.

    Advice to Management

Not worth stating, as it would not be heard nor consisted.

I have been working at Socalgas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent compensation. Different opportunities at mid-management level and lower.

    Cons

Difficult to advance, especially for African Americans... very few at higher levels. Very conservative company - innovative ideas don't always translate throughout.

    Advice to Management

Develop better, more strategic mentoring programs and hiring practices. Expand the good - but too small - diversity team. Develop more African American executives and/or key players and mentoring programs. Work and life balance - depends on the department in which you work.

    4. Friendly culture

    Cons

    1. Slow progress on any activities
    2. Laid back - you will barely spot anyone in office on Friday
    3. Not a place for workaholic

    Advice to Management

Place interns as per their interest and background, not to any openings

I worked at Socalgas (Less than a year)

    Pros

I am sure the gas company is a great place to work, but from personal perspective only if you are a full time employee. For the most part people are friendly and professional. The facilities in downtown LA are beautiful. Free water and coffee is nice.

    Cons

In this particular department there is a high turnaround. Even before people's full contract is fulfilled. Training can be improved. There is a major lack of communication between full time employees and contractors. Often late or no shows to meetings without any prior notice.

    Advice to Management

I suggest finding out what your people's strengths are and allowing them to do that. When your employees are doing what they do best your department runs more efficiently.
