Good local US culture at peer level

    Cons

    Pros

Job safety/stability, perks (cafeteria, vacation days, health care), good location

    Cons

Unable to train and pay junior employees. Keep blindly poaching expensive MDs that are ready for retirement or have dubious track records. A lot of politics and flip-flopping on large scale projects that end up costing a lot and yielding little results.

I have been working at Société Générale full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

SG has talented people and the work is interesting. There is plenty of work to go around, and there can be opportunities to move between departments.

    Cons

People in Chicago are second class to NY employees, who are second class to Paris staff. Some of the internal policies are not client-friendly, and decisions are sometimes made quickly, and not thought out.

    Advice to Management

Do not just pay lip service to being more client-centric and creating a supportive culture for the people who work at SG. Establish stronger policies which benefit clients and staff.

I worked at Société Générale full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work / life balance ; many solid , experienced Wall Street folks in non management roles. Can't think of much else positive.

    Cons

Too many French expats who don't know what they're doing ,Terrible pay vs other banks, management is nothing short of inept. Very bureaucratic organization where politics rules above all else!

    Advice to Management

Pay junior staff and stop importing "talent" who don't know the US market. Hire some locals

I have been working at Société Générale as an intern

    Pros

Good exposure to the industry and opportunity to learn and work on high level projects
    Espresso Machine

    Cons

Computers are terrible. When working here, you have to reset your pc every day or else they become really slow.
HR promises full-time at the beginning of the internship. This is a lie. Rarely is anyone kept after an internship for a full-time role.
No internship structure for Interns. You simply go to work, learn, and after your contract ends, that's it.
Hourly pay is capped at 45 hours, and not revealed that by HR until after the whole interview process is completed. Most employees stay more than 45 hrs at work, so depending on your relationship with the manager, keep track of the hours so you can threaten HR with going to Department of Labor if you are being milked.
A lot of upper management people, no one knows what value they bring.
    French social barrier.

    Advice to Management

Internship program should have some structure, instead of having interns feel as if they are being used as tools to save the bank money from hiring a full timer.

I have been working at Société Générale (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    • Good flexibility to have a balance between work and life
    • Decent bonuses
    • Global presence and opportunity for global interaction

    Cons

    • Lacks opportunity for growth
    • No path or requirements defined for career progression; be prepared to be looked over time and time again
    • Overly complicated structure
    • Not transparent in processes or communication with employees
    • Company culture lacks diversity and adequate support of their employees
    • Remote connectivity capabilities have improved but could use more improvement to make it seamless for employees
    • The work can be painful due to things (such as processes and explanations/reasons offered) often not making much sense
    • IT support is less than satisfactory
    • Employee morale is consistently quite low
    • The quality of the work you produce doesn't hold as much value as it should
    • At times they have demonstrated approval and support toward negative behavior from employees

    Advice to Management

Support your employees in their desires for opportunity and growth that are expressed. Gain some personable skills as its a no brainer that this is essential when your position involves working with people that are obligated to follow your lead. Gain the trust of your employees and maintain it. Openly communicate with your employees so they don't feel confused or left out of the changes that are occurring.

I worked at Société Générale full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Location of the building is right by Grand Central!

    Cons

There are many small clicks of upper management who have more meetings than anything I've ever seen. Many of the managers do not know what certain desks are doing nor do they care to know. It was one of the worst places I have ever worked. Forget having a life outside of work they do not want to hear you have kids or have to leave for a family emergency.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees and what they actually do for you. Give those on your teams a chance to move up the ladder. Tough working with no where to go and no bonuses.

I worked at Société Générale (More than a year)

    Pros

With Newedge: Opportunity to go back and forth between Chicago and New York offices. Lots of great people in back office support roles.

    Cons

Societe Generale acquired Newedge and "cleaned house". No consideration for current Newedge employees especially not in back office / support roles. It was all about SOCGEN!

    Advice to Management

Develop better plans for acquisition and considering talent in place.
