    Pros

Opportunity to learn is still there - if you have time.

    Cons

Middle Management lacking in professionalism and competence. Sometimes severely. Ridiculous share of decisions are made on purely political basis. That against the background of complete lack of focus or planning at these middle layers. Clear preference for quick and dirty solutions to meet arbitrary deadlines and "manage up" as opposed to professional ways of doing things. Employee morale is not anywhere near the top of the priority list. Not sure if it is on the list at all. Clear division between French and Non-French employees is not helping either - "French Connection" actually does have special meaning. Even if you admire and respect French culture.

    Advice to Management

Increase Infrastructure spending - consider that as Investment.

    Pros

Lots of flexibility and independence given to employees (mostly due to the managers being totally hands off ...see Cons).
Talented Analysts and Developers (lots of smart employees at that level)

    Cons

It is not unusual for management positions to be given to persons who have no real experience or banking knowledge...solely on the basis of their being French. You wind up with the analysts doing all of the work, managers getting the credit for doing nothing except gathering status. Maybe.

Employees given lip service about professional development. Performance reviews more for paperwork than actual study.

    Advice to Management

Try to foster an environment where all employees feel as if they are part of the team- even if they are not French.

    Pros

Hours are not bad - normal day is just 9 hours.
Vacation time is truly vacation -backup to cover your work while you're out.

    Cons

Some groups are truly hostile work environments. Both H.R and Management are aware of these departments and yet allow the abuse to continue. It is truly a lawsuit waiting to happen. Also, do not believe a word H.R tells you about compensation. Unless if you get it in writing, it will definitely be imbelished just to get you in the door but the package offered will not be the package you receive.

    Advice to Management

Terminate the hostile management immediately. If a manager has at least 5 complaints brought against her, it is a clear warning sign that the management needs to be replaced.

    Pros

easy going environment, very casual, very diverse

    Cons

    where do i start?!
-red tape/ steep management hierarchy pretty much ensures nothing get done
    - aloof management
    - byzantine systems
    - a type of place where you show up for a training class and the computers are missing or software is not installed.
    - forget recognition, it does not exist here
-finally, do not expect to be compensated fairly at year end. This company spends top dollar to lure away business people from the best banks like Goldman/JPM/MS; the rest get peanuts.

    Advice to Management

flatten the org, reap the benefits

    Pros

    Decent Pay
    Decent Benefits
Relaxed atmosphere (when its not quarter end/year end)
They're finally updating some of thier most antiquated systems

    Cons

    Management acts in crisis mode
If youre not French, good luck getting ahead
    Short sighted cost cutting/outsourcing initiatives.
Everyone from the top down stopped trying at least two years ago.
    Inept and understaffed support systems
sterotypical French laziness and inefficiency at all levels.
    Elitism of the NY office.
HR is very disconnected with the rest of the company.

    Advice to Management

Consider the value of ones work when you send it halfway around the world to people who will not go the extra mile.
Make an effort to get to know your subordinates ans what they really do for you
    Stop exporting inefficiency
Show some compassion and basic human decency for those who have been impacted and are forced to train thier Bangalore replacements

I have been working at Société Générale full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    able to take vacation days
    weekends are your own
    rare late hours

    Cons

    overly political management structure
top down poor risk culture - good people being forced out / down
paris loyalists very out of touch with new york business
risk not represented at executive committee

    Advice to Management

hopes were high that an american ceo would mean a management structure and culture more in synch with the us businsses. But that has failed to be realized. the new / old head of risk's philosophy of allignmebt with the business is close to subjugating risk to a pro forma review function. risk senior management comes off like it doesn't take things seriously. during a recent presentation by the ceo of the global investment bank, the head of market risk fell asleep.

I have been working at Société Générale full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    can take vacations
mostly ok work life balance, unless they fire your team and leave you to do the work of four people

    Cons

    bad management
    short sighted
promotions based on considerations other than competence
not friendly management environment for women.

    Advice to Management

it's ok to have to downsize the us footprint, it's ok to have to cut headcount, but it's very unfortunate when you push out the smart people and promote the mediocre. what i've seen happen over the last year is smart people leave for other companies (Credit Suisse, Bank of America) or retire. Especially bad place for women. Since Diony Lebot left (first woman CEO in the US), it's gotten much worse. more than 100 people have left since the last round of layoffs and most of them are female because the work environment is so poor.

I worked at Société Générale full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I got to meet a few nice people.

    Cons

Management did not know details of the work process.
There was no communication from management.
    No training from management.
Fellow employees were not willing to answer questions.
Minimum 30 day notice required to leave.

    Advice to Management

Support the employees in your group. They will be more loyal to the bank, if you do. Know what your employee's jobs are, it will make you a better manager.
