I worked at Social Interest Solutions (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. If you love to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty, this is your place.
    2. Supportive mentor and abundant guidance when you show interest in ownership of a project.
    3. You have to have a go-getter attitude to excel here.
    4. Amazing clients and product - you really do make a difference
    5. Lots of work to do, you always learn something new everyday.
    6. Fast paced environment, it's both a pro and con depending on your work. I personally loved it (90% of the time).
    7. Very involved management.

    Cons

    1. If you expect any hand holding and to be said repeatedly what to do and how to do and when to do a certain task, this is not a place for you. Given it's a small growing company, people don't have time to spoon feed you.
    2. There are certain times you are required to know a status of an item when you have had no visibility to it. That can be frustrating but if you can overcome that and stay ahead, you will do great!
    3. Expect to work when needed, this happens in all the companies so deal with it.

    Advice to Management

Provide strategic vision for new employees showing how unstable the HHS CMS world is an what to expect - upfront.

I have been working at Social Interest Solutions full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people at SIS are dedicated to the mission of providing access to healthcare and social services.

    Cons

A period of rapid growth led to the need to create more defined corporate policies and structure. SIS is just getting past the growing pains.

I have been working at Social Interest Solutions full-time

    Pros

Truly mission-driven organization with dedicated, brilliant employees. Extremely collaborative, fun, and unified company culture with a focus on community outreach and service (they even give full time employees a paid volunteer day as part of the already amazing benefits). Great work/life balance and respect for employees. Visibility and opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility.

    Cons

SIS is still relatively young and can feel chaotic and lacking in structure at times. Because everyone is so collaborative and constantly interacting, it can be easy to rely on relationships instead of processes. If you don't thrive in fast-paced environments this may not be the place for you.

    Advice to Management

You're taking us in a great direction!

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

New management is trying to improve process, quality, and overall environment at SIS. For my position, my boss has been willing and encouraging in terms of training, improving skills, and helping with certifications. Pretty good benefits. They encourage work-life balance, though other positions aren't as balanced as mine.

    Cons

Overall, SIS still feels very chaotic and work often feels like one step forward, two steps back. Compensation is mediocre and pretty unsatisfying.

I worked at Social Interest Solutions full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and paid time off. New management group seems to be making progress in streamlining business processes and modernizing SDLC tools. Strong vision and goals.

    Cons

Salary is average at best. Few training opportunities and even fewer promotions from the ranks. Low code quality, lack of documentation, and poor coordination make it difficult to get work done.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees' development and make them feel valued. Have a plan and stick to it instead of just muddling along.

I worked at Social Interest Solutions full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mission focused for people in need. Work hours may be long but benefits are great. Some sense of team but no over all. Recent improvement in tools and work environment have made the work easier

    Cons

Chaotic software development processes, lacking any planning and organization. Always in fire fighting mode. Lots of politics and drama starting at the leadership level. No overall rhythm for anything, always reacting to the current crisis

    Advice to Management

Get a plan, communicate the plan, hold people accountable for executing the plan, stop the drama, get rid of the slackers and those who feed on drama.
