    Pros

Job security, advancement opportunity, nationwide career choices, proud history of public service, vital social program that is important to almost all Americans. You can apply for position anywhere in th country, and you get locality pay for higher cost of living areas.

    Cons

Bureaucracy, some components have no connection to public service, too many layers of management

    Advice to Management

Eliminate unnecessary components, increase percentage of staff dealing directly with the public, give greater authority and recognition to lower levels, take a greater role in advocacy for legislative changes that would reduce costs and improve administrative efficiency.

    Pros

SSA is a fantastic place to work. However, you have to be a little lucky because your management staff will make all the difference in your experience. I've been blessed to have two wonderful management teams. It is truly a blessing to go to work each day and help people and get paid nicely. I have a bachelor's degree in sociology and my salary is over $70,000 and growing each year.

    Cons

The biggest downside is that some managers love to micro-manage.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like adults. If your employees cringe when you walk by, you aren't doing a very good job.

    Pros

    Excellent work-life balance
    Excellent benefits
Case load will keep you busy
Excellent opportunity to stay with Agency and advance professionally

    Cons

Office environment can remind a new attorney of a law school section
Work load may become somewhat repetitive once mastered

    Advice to Management

I would suggest working on providing more resources for Attorney Advisors in the form of paying bar dues and offering time off for CLE's.

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, great location, great pay, nice Thrift Savings Plan (retirement) with matching up to 5%, right now (2011 and forward) is a great time to join - many opportunities for moving up quickly.

    Cons

If you are at all comfortable with a computer or MS Office, you will be considered the resident expert and may be asked to help others and work on special projects -- on the plus side, this is noticed and will help you move up as well.

    Advice to Management

None. I have been very pleased with the 'can-do' and 'let's take care of our people' attitude by upper management - not only to meet challenges and help employes, but also in relation to the people who depend on our agency. Customer service is an important element - and is what makes me proud to work here.

    Pros

decent pay scale and advancement, balanced work and home life, lots of room for advancement of you want it, personal satisfaction gained because of the mission of the agency. Very few employees ever leave the agency. Most remain there until they retire, i.e. they must be happy there.

    Cons

There is some pressure to meet deadlines and to keep up with changes, however most employees are not overwhelmed by it.

    Advice to Management

Too much of their time is spent looking at computer derived job performance measures instead of viewing the actual work. Sometimes that can drive conflicting goals.

    Pros

Very Efficient place, using less than 1 dollar to administer out $99 in benefits. The communication within Social Security Administration is amazing. People there are willing to bend over backwards to help you. You have so much responsibility and influence over people's daily lives.

    Cons

The programs and policies are set by laws, so they cannot be changed easily. Communication flows better than most places, but there is still barriers because of the size of the organization.

    Advice to Management

You have listened and taken care of your employees, please continue to share information.
