I have been working at Social Vocational Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The clients, the staff, the flexibility and variety of activities. A new space is in the works and the art shows are fantastic.

    Cons

You don't have anything to work with, supplies, etc. be very creative with what you do because as a nonprofit there is no money for things.

    Advice to Management

You have staff that really care. Remember to be nice and respectful to your people.

I worked at Social Vocational Services part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Clients, work programs for clients, volunteer sites for clients

    Cons

Low pay for doing many jobs. Driving Vans to take clients to program and back home. Lots of unnecessary paperwork. Poor management. In charge of 4 low functioning clients. Staff drama. Staff never stays.

    Advice to Management

If you want your staff to do more then one job you should pay them more and stop hiring people who can't find jobs anywhere else. Stop telling staff they are replaceable because at the low pay you offer and high health insurance rates no one is going to want to work there. It was hard leaving my clients. Hire outside transportation for the clients or give the staff who want to drive more money.

I have been working at Social Vocational Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Schedule flexibility. While this is a pro in some cases, this makes communication suboptimal as colleagues are rarely available when needed. While it tends to be difficult to communicate with colleagues, they are routinely unresponsive on critical correspondence. In order to succeed, a motivated employee must make several calls and transmit several e-mails over several days or weeks before prompting a response. In summation,...

    Cons

Absolutely no training of staff. Management doesn't care. Wages are never adjusted for cost of living. Constant gossip and unprofessional conduct from colleagues. No direct-deposit option. Physical paychecks only. High employee turnover, meaning most personnel are uninformed. Bad attitudes from personnel lead to poor communication and dysfunctional work environment. Staff are not trained to supervise their intellectually-disabled...

    Advice to Management

Fire the sluggards and dinosaurs in management and replace them with real, compassionate leaders who are capable of making impact in the space and inspiring personnel to do the same. Offer growth opportunities and embrace a culture of innovation. Work with employees instead of against them.

    Pros

Hours are decent. Start early morning end in the afternoon. My boss is really great. So are a few of my coworkers.

    Cons

A lot of staff are lazy, highly inept. I’m given the impression this company hires almost anyone. The pay is horrible, and the management caters to lazy employees. The company is very tolerant of horrible behavior such as coming late to work, calling off, and gossip. There’s horrible, rampant, flourishing gossip in the workplace that the company doesn’t seem to mind. Company doesn’t show much appreciation for Admin employees,...

    Advice to Management

With all due respect: develop more professionalism, appreciation for your employees, and take leadership skills classes as well as anger management. We all have stress but management needs to handle their responsibilities in a more productive way. You are working with people and it's important to remember to be nice, caring, and provide guidance instead of getting angry at employees that are trying to do their job. If...
