I worked at Society of Exploration Geophysicists full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It's a professional association related to oil and gas members worldwide. This means you'll meet and potentially become friends with people from all over the world. Loved my coworkers and had the blessing of great bosses. It's on 91st and Yale , a beautiful location!

    Cons

It's related to oil and gas so when prices fall, the association might feel the effects as well.

I worked at Society of Exploration Geophysicists full-time

    Pros

Overall, good executive management and leadership.

    Cons

Lack of opportunities for growth. Good for some, but majority of roles are highly administrative and task-oriented.

I have been working at Society of Exploration Geophysicists

    Pros

Great pay, benefits, location and a great staff of people

    Cons

It's different in each department with some better than the others, but expect to be overworked and overlooked. "Not my problem" is the norm along with egos and personal agendas. The core values are lip service at best. Membership and annual meeting numbers are down and finger pointing is preferred to any real innovation. Beware some mid-management when they promise they support your success. They got their toolbelts from Fischer Price.

I have been working at Society of Exploration Geophysicists full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    1) Good location 2) Good benefits 3) Flexible schedules 4) Pay is higher than average nonprofits, but employees (i.e., non-management) not adequately compensated for their expertise 5) Possibly 1-2 "safe" departments with stability and professional colleagues 6) Fairly decent work/life balance

    Cons

    1) No upward mobility (disclaimer: greater chance for upward mobility if you are male or within a certain department) 2) Inadequate salary adjustments (disclaimer: management is monetarily compensated at a higher rate than non-management. Non-management staff consistently see less money each year and hopes of any substantial pay raise is dangled like a carrot to keep people there. Everyone receives a year-end bonus, but a handful of people receive additional money based on unspecified criteria and asked to keep it quiet.) 3) Toxic gossiping and in-fighting between departments 4) Handful of directors/managers who need to be "given an opportunity to seek employment elsewhere" 5) Favoritism based on gender (male-centric)

I have been working at Society of Exploration Geophysicists

    Pros

Flexible schedule, decent people -- for the most part

    Cons

The upper management won't manage. They delegate to the point where no one will make a decision. The executive director has good intentions but at one point or another we as SEG need to know our direction and need someone to steer the ship.

I have been working at Society of Exploration Geophysicists

    Pros

There aren't many pros, friendly staff, nice location, 91st and yale

    Cons

No vertical movement available unless a part of the SMT. Directors are out of touch with staff. When asked how to improve morale amongst staff the current CEO brushed it off like it was a joke and did a dance.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Society of Exploration Geophysicists full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nice building and campus, great south Tulsa location. Great benefits. There is a possibility of travel depending on your department.

    Cons

The downturn in the oil industry has definitely caught the leaders with "their pants down." The carefree spending and travel has taken a toll! Management recently laid off 30% of their staff in three waves. After each time management assured staff it wouldn't happen again. No one is safe unless they are Senior Staff. Everyone is fearful when they come to work, that this will be the day they let them go. It appears the senior staff randomly laid off people without a back-up plan to cover duties left. I believe they were just looking at salaries to be cut and not at the people and what they did. Everyone is scrambling to cover the job duties of those let go. The work/life balance is very askew. In the chaos and turmoil it looks as if the leaders have lost sight of their purpose, the members.
