I have been working at Socratic Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very energetic atmosphere, with lots of smart people working on interesting projects. Culture is very collaborative; co-workers are not at all political and will help whenever asked. Moving to the new building is definitely an upgrade and the mood seems very upbeat. Business is growing a lot—so the pace is really fast. The senior managers are very good at sharing knowledge and the vision of where the company is headed seems right on target. You learn something new every day.

    Cons

There were several managers in the past who were not very pleasant, but they’re gone now and things are much, much better in terms of the work environment. We should have more all-company get-togethers…sometimes people in the remote offices don’t feel as much a part of the team.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people quick! The business is growing so fast, it seems like every week there is another huge contract. The current team is excellent and is handling everything pretty well, but it would be nice to have more backup.

I worked at Socratic Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small teams lack bureaucracy and offer direct client exposure. Smart and experienced group leaders stay close to every project (pro and con). Able to tackle advanced analytics and out of the box survey designs.

    Cons

The company has a strange history of expansion and contraction and never seems to quite have its staff sized appropriate to the volume of work. There seems to be a recurring 3-year cycle of hiring/stagnation/layoffs.

Other staffing issues are related to considerable employee churn which speaks to low employee morale (intense deadlines and limited shared resources combined with average wages for its locations).

    Advice to Management

Group leaders are doing a great job but their involvement at the project level challenges their ability to build business. Better structuring teams and retaining senior staff should alleviate that. Leverage contract resources instead of hiring to break the cycle.

    Pros

Very open environment. Easy to communicate with superiors. Small and unbeurocratic

    Cons

Mediocre compensation, lot's of tight deadlines and long hours, 'unlimited' time off but with guilt culture surrounding it so you never quite feel comfortable taking it.

    Advice to Management

Formalize vacation time. Pay better and make it easier to keep a regular 40 hr work week. Too many people burn out and leave the company for better opportunities elsewhere. Figure out how to keep talent around.

I worked at Socratic Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to learn all of the nuts and bolts of online research - you have to because processes are quite manual and staffing is light. Project directors have broad responsibility for most aspects of a research project.

Unlimited vacation is great in theory, but with staffing so light it's hard to take time off.

    Cons

Pay is low relative to the industry, hours are long, training is all informal, and middle and senior management can be unpleasant/unprofessional in their interactions with staff.

Turnover is higher than many management consultancy firms due to poor moral, burn out, and unpleasant culture.

Manual processes and lack of formal training of analyst staff hurts quality of work.

    Advice to Management

The self-admitted values of senior management "I don't care if I'm liked as long as I'm respected" cause poor morale and unhealthy/inappropriate workplace interaction.
