Softchoice is OK
Dec 16, 2015 - Corporate Account Manager in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The culture is a huge selling point. Being able to bring your dog to work and have HQ in downtown Toronto is great. The people are young too. Good benefits and RSP matching program. Very involved with charitable work including 2 free volunteer days per year.
Cons
Not a great structure, the pay isn't comparable to other resellers of IT. There is quite a lot of turnover mostly due to salary issues. No clear path of progression, disconnects at different levels of the business.

Lacks direction
Jan 10, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Cool culture and nice people work here. A lot of community give back (2 paid volunteer days, Softchoice cares charity funding). Dog friendly workplace (if you like dogs). Relaxed dresscode.
Cons
Pay - below industry standards. Flat structure (usually I put this as a pro), however, it is difficult in certain roles to navigate a career at Softchoice for this reason. Really high turnover of staff. Lots of great talent walk out the door. Change is slow to happen here. Work life balance can be bad depending on your position.

SME supporting the sales organization.
Feb 8, 2018 - in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Softchoice is an amazing organization that has a good problem - lots of business and clients are quite happy with the services offered. Outside of core business activities, there are many positive extra curriculum to participate in. From board committee's to join, Softchoice cares volunteer work and many social events. I accelerated my business and technical skills substantially and was engaged deeply in my work. I chose to resign to pursue professional growth and development by pursuing a leadership role with a non competitive organization.
Cons
Even though it is a chill environment there is quite a bit of red tape and rules of engagement. This is due to the organization rapidly growing and having to adopt to a strict corporate culture. One of the most valuable and strategic lines of business has experienced a substantial amount of staff turnover in the presales team. Over 2 years I observed 7 skilled employees leave. Only 3 of the 7 were dismissed. Concern, why is senior management not acknowledging this churn in a highly focussed practice where growth is critical.

Pros
- Occasional fun events like beer cart - Dogs in the office - Month training in Toronto
Cons
- Pay well below average for a comparable position somewhere else - Unrealistic expectation of position given in interview process - High turnover with no focus to improving which makes it feel like upper management really sees people in this position as expendable - Unfair metrics and treatment between reps, teams, and offices - Upper management seems not to care about their people, just the bottom line - Micromanagement I interviewed in 2015 and was given a completely inaccurate picture of what this position entails. I was told I would be given a handful of accounts to start with and would grow from there. After arriving in Toronto, my training class was blindsided with a new onboarding program that involved making a minimum of 100 cold calls a day with a strict $10k revenue sales target to hit in 3 months. If you do not hit this target, you will be let go without exception. the first month of training involved very little sales training and was much more focused on products, despite being repeatedly told 'just use your resources for technical questions.' Long story short, the company sells the idea of their culture very hard, but dogs in the office is simply not worth the 5 figure pay decrease you would take coming here instead of somewhere else.

Dynamic Technology Sales That Rises and Falls With Its People
Apr 1, 2011 - in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Softchoice is a genuinely interesting, active and 'young' company, with a relaxed in-office atmosphere and fairly trendy facilities. The ability to bring a dog to work or visit someone else's should not be under-rated. Many employees are bright, friendly and interested in a sense of community - the company's greatest strength are the people who last past their first year, and aim to make a career of it. The benefits package is excellent - and underutilized - compared to many employers. On-site gym at head office is nice, monthly 'beer cart' and President's Club trips are all nice up-ticks. I am seldom unhappy about coming to work; my co-workers make all the difference. If you're willing to put your head down and work hard, keep your nose clean, and be patient, you can do pretty well here.
Cons
Impossible not to sound mercenary, but pay is notoriously poor for all elements; Sales complain endlessly about their still-superior pay, which demoralizes support groups. Recognition and fiscal incentive for the crucial, hard-working operational teams is notably lacking - many are self-motivated or strive because of their teams, not because of immediate management or reasonable rewards. There are some excellent mid-level managers, but again, Operations is afflicted with mutually-supportive ineffectuals, to the organization's detriment. High turnover in Sales positions destabilizes, while popular managers proceed through a string of Byzantine management roles. I've personally seen effective but less-popular team leaders and managers be passed-over for better connected candidates, regardless of their actual experience vis a vis the new role. For no apparent reason, upkeep of simple facilities (kitchen areas, bathrooms) seems to challenge facilities; cleaning is minimal at best.

Pros
Great culture, great people, great perks
Cons
Softchoice preaches culture yet they're hypocrites. You can live by the culture, believe in it, hit your metrics, do well overall and still be let go because your manager doesn't like you. Doesn't give ANY feedback to improve on. They say there's no politics. It's ALL politics. And you wonder why the turnover rate is so high at this company, even at the management level.

Great Company, even better culture, meh pay for the industry
Nov 15, 2018 - Territory Sales Representative in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Softchoice Sales Academy and hands-on mentorship to enable your success - Great people, beautiful office - Great work/life balance and work-from-home perks once you are tenured 6 months - Phenomenal mentorship from management and upper management - strong diversity and inclusion committments - Great place to start
Cons
- The salary is low for the amount of work you do. (Salary should be around 50K in my opinion MINIMUM to start) - Depending on your sales territory and it's exposure it may give you a setback in doing as well as your peers. (Ie. Canada V.S Some U.S territories) - You only get commission after you hit 75% to your plan otherwise you get $0 - Commission strucutre complicated and nobody gets it - The draw they give you for the 6-months of $625 needs to be paid back in sales - The 'promotion' structure is BS. You work very hard to get to a TSR Level 2 and you only get a $3,000 A YEAR increase and your quota goes through the roof. If you were once making decent commission, you get set-back by this promotion as it will take a while to ramp up again (unless you have inherited some great accounts) - High turnover rate due to the competitive market - a lot of people at Softchoice leave for a better salary offer
