I have been working at Software Specialists full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work and treat employees well.

    Cons

Too cheap - India or bust - will not hire in the US even when it is absolutely necessary. Company is following the path of cheapest employees - even when proven that US based operations are more successful and needed. Management is too interested in being "MULTI NATIONAL" because it is cheap.

    Advice to Management

Quit following industry trends that are 3 years old and blaze the trail. Right now you are a $30MM company when companies younger than you are over $250MM by blazing the trail.

I worked at Software Specialists (Less than a year)

    Pros

Rate per hour and alleged benefits that were not going to kick in until 3 mos, whereas contract was for 3 mos.

    Cons

Many: In a hurry to get me into job, admin emailed at end of first day to see if I showed up, no support, incorrect paychecks, client cancelled contract on Friday, and I was not told until Sunday by email at 10pm when I was not expecting email so was not aware until I showed up at client and they had security collect my badge and walk me out. Very embarrassing and will never work for them again.

    Advice to Management

    Correct bad practices

I worked at Software Specialists full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The on-boarding process was completely painless and timely and the interviewing / placement process was smooth. Organized several "local contractor" social events to encourage interaction.

    Cons

This was the first time in my career that overtime COST me money! The 40 hour wage was competitive, but the 41st hour was [1/2] the hourly wage instead of [1.5]. When the client needs 60 hours and your 20 hours of over time are paid at less than you made the first 40, there is something really wrong.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your contractors - or explain where the O/T money goes because the client is paying it and if the contractor isn't getting it, who is?

    Pros

SSI is a "work hard, play hard" company. They are sensitive to work/life balance and are very generous to the employees. The employees work hard, have great incentives to succeed, and have a good time together. The owner is a great guy, very family oriented, very easy to work for. The VP is awesome.

    Cons

Some managers are not managers; well, not good managers. There is a huge disconnect between managers and employees. There is a lack of respect among sales, recruiters and their respective managers. Meetings are way too long and unproductive and threats are issued unnecessarily.

    Advice to Management

Use a recruiter to find better managers. There is a lack of expertise and professionalism among managers and some of the employees. Remember that you get what you pay for. You hire nice people, but they are not necessarily good at what they do. You would be much further ahead if you just bit the bullet, paid for an expert and let that person increase productivity and, consequently, revenue.

    Pros

Management wants to see you succeed. You're not just another number to them. The company is very reputable and is an easy selling point to potential clients.

    Cons

Because the HQ only has a few employees, it's easy for mild annoyances to turn into "In-Fighting"

    Advice to Management

Don't let pettyness distract you from your job. Some peopel just complain to complain-It may be best to nip it in the bud early and tell that type of employee to "Shut Up and Work", for lack of a better term.
