I have been working at Solar Turbines for less than a year

    Pros

    • My mentors were some of the best I've ever had. • Extremely flexible. High level of trust that enables interns to make the most of their time. • Free coffee! • Great environment and atmosphere.

    Cons

    • Interns were in crowded room and it was often way too loud. • Slow computers. • Slow approval of software requests that we really needed.

I worked at Solar Turbines for less than a year

    Pros

Beautiful location, great people, supportive culture. For the ambitious employee there are ample opportunities for advancement. The work is challenging and interesting, and at least within manufacturing there were no real deadlines, so work/life balance was great. I got access to a brand new 3D printer, even as a lowly intern.

    Cons

Departments tend to be very isolated from one another, so it's easy to feel lost in the larger company. As an intern it felt like there was more people than work, so things tended to be slow.

    Advice to Management

Interns have a very short amount of time to accomplish things. Be ready for them to hit the ground running when they arrive, and have a little more work so they don't get bored.

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Long time presence in San Diego. If you can get in, this is a stable company that's willing to do what it takes to stay in business.

    Cons

Being a subsidiary of Caterpillar, this is corporate America at it's worst. No personal interaction. Individuals experience, expertise, and opinion is not considered at all.

    Advice to Management

Put more focus on the individual. Be more transparent. I'm happy to have a job but I don't look forward to going to work each day. This environment makes people feel like robots and ensures sub-par quality labor.

    I worked at Solar Turbines

    Pros

Solar Turbines offers a challenging, but fun work environment. The different departments are easily accessible across the organization in order to effectively complete projects.

    Cons

Some of the computer software and telephone systems are a bit behind the times. Additionally, the general mentality of the company is to maintain the products and designs of the past, rather than moving forward with new or different ideas.
